In law school, my most Socratic and scary (but later absolute favorite—I was his TA) 1L professor taught us to make our best arguments and then “argue against yourself.”

That’s what I think Elie Mystal is doing.

He’s gotten himself caught up in the “best” argument against DOJ. In other words, he’s smart enough to know that his argument is extremely weak when compared to the strongest argument that yes, Merrill Garland absolutely knows what he’s doing and is doing it quite well.

But he got caught up in his devil’s advocate argument.

The thing about Tom Nichols’ ‘we must save democracy first and address racism later’ isn’t just the fact that its horrific to tell folks to wait for their human rights—

It’s that it’s POLITICALLY stupid.

The ONLY way to save democracy is to defeat white supremacy. White supremacy is what built a system where democracy no longer functions. It was built to give *white people* democratic representation.

Now the system we built is fully intertwined with white supremacy and until white “allies” accept that they are useless (at best).

She’s not wrong. A lot of folks do spend entirely too much time policing language and tone. But this sentiment is actually a result of *too little* and indirect an approach to talking about race.

Taking on white supremacy head-on gives these folks an off-ramp they need.

The voters in this focus group seem totally confused by what Critical Race Theory actually is and whether it really is taught in schools. But they’re well aware that TMAC wanted them to think Youngkin=Trump.

In many parts of the country right now, law enforcement wouldn’t haven’t even pressed charges against them for any of this.

These 80%+ red counties are literal bastions of white supremacy.

Leftists want us to lose the Georgia Senate races because if we have the senate, we make progress, which they despise.

Manchin will vote to make Schumer majority leader, which means all the bills McConnell is blocking will get to the floor.

Manchin has to vote down each individual bill he wants to sink.
