A thread on Russia’s continued invasion of Ukraine in 2023.

In January there was optimism after liberation. Now Kyiv is battling western doubt and divided attentions.

The war is already a story of extraordinary survival, the problem for Kyiv is it’s not over: In January the story of the frontlines was Bakhmut. An eastern city which Russia was throwing everything at while Ukraine held on.

It would eventually fall in May, giving Moscow its first gain in 10 months.

My first year in Ukraine is ending with the country continuing to overcome a threat to its very existence.

Many saw the gathering of 150,000 🇷🇺 troops as a bluff.

It still seemed to matter who was providing military aid or training.
