In the spring of 1965, Bob Dylan returned from an exhausting tour in Europe in need of a vacation. Unhappy with the public’s perception of him and the direction his career was headed, he was ready to quit music altogether.
“I was very drained,” he later recounted. “It’s very tiring having other people tell you how much they dig you if you yourself don’t dig you.” In other words, as a folk musician whose star was starting to rise, Dylan was disillusioned with his own success.
