A week ago, I lost the best job I ever had. HuffPost was my professional home for 9 years and I truly loved it. A wonderful workplace filled with creative, hardworking, supportive people. I don't have a say about the future of HuffPost but I will indulge in some reminiscence. HuffPost inspired me to do the best work of my career. I'm proud of the journalism we did together. My past editors, @petersgoodman, @EmilyRPeck (a fellow layoff victim), and @samstein, helped me find a voice I didn't know I had and pushed me to be more creative. Thank you.

I wondered what Tony Fauci does all day since this White House ignores him. So I asked the man himself. bit.ly/2VBI3uN I really wanted to headline this "Tony Fauci Has A Cold" but I didn't think enough people would get the reference. bit.ly/2VBI3uN

I could not bring myself to take Trump's health care speech today seriously, and neither should anybody. bit.ly/2S9WIMl That was so much garbage in that speech I couldn't get to all of it. There are also some really wonky things his administration has done - like for kidney disease patients - that are totally fine and okay, but they don't rise to the level of "health care reform."

It will surprise no one that Trump is two minutes into this health care speech and roughly 95% of what he's said is bullshit. He's so obviously bored. He did get a little worked up when he said "China virus," though.

People are giving Bill Barr guff about declaring New York City an #AnarchistJurisdiction. Well, this Brooklyn resident is here to tell you it's a nightmare out there! I documented the horrors I found within just one block of my apartment. READER DISCRETION ADVISED [1/11] I encountered this unsettling scene right on my own doorstep. Where is the baby? Don't bother asking Di Blasio, who banned the cops from investigating baby snatching. #AnarchistJurisdiction [2/11] Image

You might think confronting mortality just comes with the territory for health care workers. But these are human beings like the rest of us. All this suffering takes a toll. bit.ly/2FEVQN6 Talking to health care workers this year, I've been struck by how every one of them said they were more worried about passing the virus to others than they were about their own lives. bit.ly/2FEVQN6

My employer says all the right things about the importance of a diverse newsroom. Those words, however, aren't backed up with nearly enough action. Here's what @HuffPostUnion calls on @HuffPost and @verizonmedia to do: bit.ly/32uqq4E ImageImageImageImage

I love that the premise here seems to be that all 1,700 NFL players were in lower Manhattan on 9/11 -- presumably kneeling on American flags -- steadfastly refusing to help. Image "Where was the NFL when American patriots were fighting for FREEDOM at Lexington and Concord??"

Voters in Missouri will decide today whether to amend the state constitution to expand Medicaid, a policy opposed by the Republican establishment. bit.ly/3fNrkgN The AP has called the #Amendment2 election for supporters of Medicaid expansion in Missouri: 52%-48%. Big tallies from the St. Louis, Kansas City, Columbia, and Springfield metro areas overcame significant opposition in rural counties. Story t/k.

Someone please make a browser extension that changes "false claims" into "horseshit" in stories about Trump. (yes, I have written that phrase in stories. I blame @recordedvoice for not letting us use the word "horseshit.")

Oklahoma -- a state with a GOP governor, huge Republican majorities in the state legislature, a congressional delegation that's 6-1 Republican, and that went 68%-29% for Trump over Clinton -- just voted to provide government health care to 200,000 people. bit.ly/31u0ztn I'm sorry to be so obvious, but I guess my point is that making it so that people can go to the doctor when they're sick is at least narrowly more popular than the opposite. I mean, right? And yet! This!

Folks, if you thought the ballot initiative expand Medicaid in Oklahoma would be close, you were right. Image Franky, even if this winds up losing, the fact that roughly half of the residents of a very Republican state wants to expand a government-run health care program for low-income people is more evidence of the disconnect between people and their politicians.

Every word of this 👇🏻 I'd add that media companies that try to bust unionizing campaigns keep losing, and the bad will they create bullshitting they're employees about unions doesn't dissipate after the union wins. The workers remember, and it strengthens their solidarity.

This is great and any journalist can relate, no matter what they cover. I'd love to read one like this from congressional reporters.... bit.ly/2ZoSvt0 Like this one is pretty tame, but I can't tell you how many times I could tell a reporter thought they were talking to a different member of Congress. Telling Henry Waxman and Pete DeFazio apart apparently was difficult for a lot of Capitol Hill reporters! Image

I keep thinking about Trump the other week saying that PPE shortages are "fake news" and then thinking about all these health care workers using GoFundMe to raise money to buy their own supplies. bit.ly/35dLs7n I couldn't make room for it in my article, but I also talked to two doctors in Nashville who raised money to buy $100 gift cards for every custodial employee at the veterans hospital (many of whom are veterans themselves, the doctors told me.) bit.ly/2Wbmbq2

Newly jobless and need health coverage? Your options range from expensive to cheap to free to nothing at all, and a lot depends on where you live. Think COBRA vs. exchange plans vs. Medicaid/CHIP vs. you're SOL. bit.ly/3aWfGxx In these states, the health insurance exchanges are currently open for anyone who is uninsured for any reason, including job lost. Note that the @AccessHealthCT deadline is TOMORROW and the @MNsure deadline is TUESDAY. Image

Why does it have to be a military officer, though? Does wearing a uniform make someone inherently more qualified to manage private sector supply chains? It doesn't and it doesn't, is my point.

I've talked to a bunch of nurses and other hospital employees over the past week or so. They are afraid, and with good reason. bit.ly/2XgeBNg A custodial worker at a Baltimore hospital was told N95 masks are "for special people" after being ordered to clean a COVID patient's room. bit.ly/2XgeBNg
