Vance may well be right. I am the enemy. Let me explain: In the classes I taught in church history I taught about Augustine's notion of the will to power and the ways it distorts and destroys human society. We explored the incurvature of the human soul into itself that has been label "original sin." 1/

A thread on toxic theology, or why "God" can be a problem. Part of what is driving unrest and chaos in America today rests in a toxic theology that motivates ppl to act in certain ways. The connection btw Christianity and the 1/6 insurrection has been covered by others, but the theology that animates ppl sometimes remains hidden. 1/

@simonbarrow @Ekklesia_co_uk Some thoughts on Fintan's piece.

So, about the Rapture? I have some thoughts. The Rapture is not a thing and Jesus is not coming back, at least not in the way that over 35 million imagine. The Rapture is part of a theological scheme cooked up in the 19th century by John Nelson Darby. 1/ It was a theological innovation that entered into American consciousness through camp meetings, conferences, and other means, run mostly by evangelical/fundamentalist communities. The whole idea is not really a part of the Christian tradition and those who accept it as truth, 2/

THREAD: My career has been spent studying Christianity and the rise of Nazism, specifically, the massive moral failure of a religion in the face of political nihilism to recognize it and fight back. In early 30's Hitler promised Germany he would take care of the communists /1 and other "degenerates" who threatened Christian civilization. He made the religious appeal knowing Germans would instinctively protect a religion that legitimated and justified anti-Semitism and cultural power, even though he had no real commitment to Christianity. /2
