NEW: How one survivor's discovery of a bank statement for $16 million dollars and a handwritten letter in Cyrillic launched a years-long investigation into who she came to believe was the son of one of the CIA's most valuable Russian spies:

news.yahoo.com/how-a-brutal-a… I first met Lisa the day after my birthday in the winter of 2020. I'm speechless finally bringing her story to you, today.

In her own words: "How many others can there be?....Even if there's one, it's too much."

White House claiming victory for "ending the pandemic," which is blatantly untrue.

Also "understanding our planet." What does that even mean? Here's my March piece on the OSTP and its challenge finding a role at the White House in the coronavirus pandemic: news.yahoo.com/president-trum…

Fiona Hill, Trump's former top Russia expert on the NSC, tells @jimsciutto that Trump's reelection would boost the Kremlin's hopes to continue to sow chaos, but in his first term, Russia has not really succeeded with "concrete policy goals" like loosening of sanctions. On threats to the election: "Vladimir Putin is not going to steal your vote from the mail, the biggest risk is that it's not delivered on time."

"It would seem that despite Trump’s record in bullying, berating, and investigating the United States Intelligence Community, when it comes to Iran, the CIA’s leaders have been among the enablers of his more hawkish tendencies," writes @douglaslondon5:

mei.edu/publications/t… Very interesting argument about how CIA has supported and propped up Pompeo and Trump's hawkish drive vs Iran, perhaps sometimes ignoring reality—and perhaps helping Pompeo politically in the future. Image

Lt. Gen Ashley of DIA, on the effort to track the pandemic inside the intel community:

"We did it early on. We looked at everything we knew, who we told, when we knew it, what leader knew it. I am confident we did what we were supposed to do." He says the National Center for Medical Intelligence is tasked with understanding "the capacity of a foreign military to deal with a pandemic...I'm very proud of the NCMI team, they did their job and they got the word out."

1) Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Demers says the Chinese consulate in Houston "has long been on the radar screen of the FBI as a source of significant IP theft coming from it, including recruitment into the talent program, spotting and assessing folks." 2) He also says the Houston Consulate has been at the forefront of covert foreign influence, which he hays he hopes "one day to talk more about."

Houston "was not chosen at random out of consulates out there," he said.

Earlier, @MarkWarner at @AspenSecurity said he is pushing the admin and the IC to publish more intel on ongoing election interference. "The American public needs to be informed about some of the Russian disinformation campaigns that are taking place right now." "The first document that was put out was not sufficient," he said, referring to this statement from DNI: dni.gov/index.php/ncsc…

Per Warner, the admin has reassured him there's more to come, "this is the first step of what will be a number of disclosures."

Bolton, during @AspenSecurity online, says he doesn't think his testimony would've ultimately mattered to impacting the conclusion of the impeachment inquiry. Says he believes it "took a book" to tell his whole story. "For the first time in my adult life I'm not going to vote for the Republican nominee," says Bolton. Advises that allies treat Trump like "an anomaly" rather than assuming he has some grand "Trump doctrine" or strategy that others successors might continue.

Patrick Hovakimian, currently Chief of Staff to Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey A. Rosen at DOJ, being asked questions about how he'd handle another Ukraine whistleblower as ODNI GC.

He says, "generally speaking, all whistleblower complaints should be forwarded to Congress." Answering questions from Sen. Feinstein, he also says he read SSCI's torture report executive summary and found it "illuminating and terrifying at the same time."

"Torture is wrong. If confirmed, I will enforce the law."

I get “intense” a lot. Actually this specifically reminds me of a male editor who shall go unnamed who upon meeting me for coffee to try and hire me said I was extremely arrogant and thought I knew everything/was stuck up when I simply answered his q’s and tried to have an enjoyable chat.

A bit of wonkery for you today:

After nearly two years, Bill Evanina has finally been confirmed to lead counterintel efforts at ODNI, a job he's long been doing in an acting capacity. After a 2 year hold placed on the nomination by Sen. Grassley, Sen. Wyden came out today in opposition based on the fact that ODNI never produced uniform guidance to its agencies on whistleblower protection, particularly in circumstances of retaliation.

I’m told the DNI workforce was told to expect Ambassador Grenell to arrive to greet them today or tomorrow.

As the second acting DNI since the summer, and with the General Counsel and the exec director leaving, the Trump admin is winnowing down the office’s influence. Flashback: this was always the plan.

“Trump years are like dog years, we move pretty quickly.” He describes the Middle East peace plan as “serious, detailed, and realistic” and argues “it’s a fantastic opportunity for Palestinians to come to the table,” saying “we were able to unite the Israelis, which was no easy task.”

I was blessed to be too busy spending time with friends on the last day of the year to do an earnest tweet thread and I also forgot and also @HowellONeill outdid whatever I would have come up with, but I'll say this: 2019, with its flaws, was a great year for me. @HowellONeill I arrived @YahooNews and solidified a kickass reporting team with @zachsdorfman as well as the legendary @SeanDNaylor. I was privileged and honored to continue working with @weinbergersa, as anyone who has worked with her understands. I got co-bylines with most of the Yahoo team.
