These narratives are so exhausting & exist to both justify inequalities whilst positioning the working-class as stupid, uncultured & undeserving.
So let’s take this example of ‘the seaside is free’ as an option for a family day out for a single mother of 3 kids from London.
The mum works 2 zero-hour jobs (& only receiving child benefits for 2 of her 3 kids) plans to take them to Southend for a day during the half-term break. This gives her 6 weeks to plan.
1st - she does is negotiate a day off from her 2 jobs
2nd – she books advance travel

#dyslexia #academia🧵
If you want to understand how unconscious bias works in academia I have many stories, but this is one that stays with me. For the purposes of anonymity of universities, I’m not identifying who I’m talking about although I know the person is open about this.
This person was a 1st class student at their first university. At their second university no matter how hard they worked they kept getting 2.1. They were the only diagnosed dyslexic in their class & used to put a university recommended note in their assignments stating this.
