🧵(1/) Every time someone talks about eliminating property taxes, the political class asks:

“BuT hOw WiLl We FuNd GoVeRnMeNt?”

That question starts from the wrong premise. It assumes the size of government today is automatically the “correct” size. It isn’t. #txlege (2/) Before we ask how to fund the government, we should ask:

➡️ How big should government be in the first place?

Right now, Texas property tax levies have grown far faster than population + inflation. That is not “funding government.” That is feeding bloat.

(1/🧵) A major education bill is back on the table in the #txlege special session: SB 8, a proposal to eliminate the STAAR test & overhaul TX’s school accountability system.

At first glance, it sounds like a win. But here’s why we at @TXPolResearch oppose it unless amended. ⬇️ (2/) ✅ We support eliminating STAAR.

It's overly rigid, high-stakes, and misaligned with classroom instruction. But SB 8 doesn’t just eliminate STAAR; it replaces it with something that could be even more burdensome.

(🧵1/) Today, the #txlege House Culture, Recreation & Tourism Committee considers SB 22—a HUGE expansion of state film subsidies. Here's why this bill steps far outside the proper role of government & raises serious constitutional and fiscal concerns. (2/) SB 22 creates a massive new Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Fund—$500M every 2 years taken straight from general revenue. This fund is managed outside the treasury & can spend without further legislative approval. That's unchecked power. #txlege

(🧵1/) 🚨 SB 22 ALERT #txlege
Starting Monday, SB 22 is on Senate Intent Calendar. Texans need to know just how bad this bill is. This bill isn’t just bad policy—it’s a taxpayer-funded disaster wrapped in censorship & cronyism. Here’s why Texans should be sounding the alarm. (🧵2/) SB 22 creates a $500 million off-budget slush fund to bankroll the Texas film & multimedia industry—managed by the Governor’s Office, with zero legislative appropriation needed to spend it.

That’s $1.5 BILLION over the next 6 years. With. No. Guardrails. 💸

(🧵1/) Today, the #txlege Senate takes up #SB1 or the proposed state budget for FY2026- 27. At @TXPolResearch, we recommended lawmakers vote NO, barring significant improvements. Here is why: (🧵2/) The 2026-2027 budget (SB 1) is the largest in Texas history — $336.1 billion. That's a 42.7% increase in state spending over just two cycles.

That kind of growth far exceeds population + inflation. Here's why that’s a problem. 👇
