I lower my gun, ‘HOW FUCKING OLD ARE YOU?’ She mumbles, ‘14. We were just bored, ding-dong ditching.’ The other pulls their mask off, another teenager. No weapons. No threat. Just kids.

I clear my gun, hands trembling, and it hits me, I almost shot two children. My anger explodes, but then relief floods in, and I’m dizzy with it. I could’ve ended their lives, left their parents grieving, changed my own family forever,all because I didn’t know. To me, they were intruders, faceless,in the dark.

Cops came, took them home, I guess. I walked back inside, told my wife, tucked my kids in again. It’s 5 AM now. I’m sitting here with coffee, adrenaline crashing, replaying every second. I burst into tears, puked, because if I’d pressed that trigger a little harder, two bored kids would be gone. Their families destroyed. Mine too.

The Numbers Tell the Story
Between 2019 and 2024, over 700,000 migrant children were placed in the care of the U.S. government.

This 72% increase overwhelmed shelters, foster programs, and caseworkers.

Meanwhile, domestic foster care remains in crisis:
•Over 400,000 U.S. children are in foster care today.
•Many lack stable placements, leading to homelessness, abuse, and neglect. Facilities Are Stretched Thin
To house the influx of UACs:
•The U.S. expanded from 170 facilities in 2019 to 289 in 2024—a 70% increase.
•These facilities are often funded by federal dollars that could otherwise support programs for American kids.

🏠 Result: Fewer beds, resources, and attention for U.S. foster children who need stability and care.

Caseworkers Overloaded
Child welfare caseworkers are already overburdened. Adding UAC cases to their workload strains the system even more.
•Average caseloads for U.S. caseworkers: 24–31 children (already far above recommended limits).
•UAC cases often require intensive vetting of sponsors, slowing down support for domestic children.

📉 Impact: U.S. children face delayed placements, less oversight, and worse outcomes.

The Cost to American Communities
The cost of caring for migrant children is astronomical:
•FY 2024 UAC budget: $8.6 billion.
•Per child cost: $18,000–$30,000 annually.

Meanwhile, domestic child welfare programs remain underfunded, leaving U.S. kids without access to:
•Mental health support.
•Educational resources.
•Permanent placements.
