When my grandmother was 9 years old, she and her family lived in Texas and they were extremely poor. She lived with her mother and stepfather and three sisters. My great-grandmother made all their clothes, and they scrimped on everything so that they had enough to eat. My great-grandmother knew she couldn't afford much as far as Christmas presents go, but she remembered that the Kansas City Star allowed free advertisements. All she had to do was save up two pennies for a stamp. She used to read the Kansas City Star when she lived in Missouri.
