I think I've finally solved the mystery behind Kuala Lumpur's name. We've been looking at the wrong river junction all this time. Let me explain with a short thread🧵 Market Street Bridge over the Klang River photographed in around 1880. For those that don't know, Kuala Lumpur means "Muddy Confluence." This is weird because Malays typically don't name places like that. "Kualas" (areas where two rivers meet) are usually named after the smaller river. So isn't Malaysia's capital called Kuala Gombak?
