You should be outraged about Intro 606 (a bill to require e-bike "licenses") -- EVEN IF YOU DO NOT RIDE AN E-BIKE.

It's an insane stop-and-frisk revival.

The bill would let the NYPD pull over ANYONE on ANY BIKE -- even if they haven't broken the law.

Let me explain... Intro 606 would require any bike with an electric assist to be licensed.

This appears straightforward. It's actually a deceptive route to a massive increase in police power.

Okay! This is going to take a while... Safety science tells us that large-scale disasters are not singular in cause but the result of a cascading series of lapses. My thesis is that this is true of small common disasters, like traffic crashes, as well -- but also of larger TRENDS in those small common disasters. Image

Doug Burgum has banned gender-affirming care, teaching critical race theory, and abortion past 6 weeks. Doug Burgam's "walkable city" is only safe if you're white, cis, and don't need reproductive health care. For urbanists to present this without critique says they're fine with cities built for only those people.

I've been surprised to hear from a few of you who ride regular bikes who are support e-bike licensing.

Let me explain. Reason number one... 1. E-bike licensing will not solve the problem.

Anyone who has ever called 311 for a car in the bike lane or gotten a "bike bell" ticket knows the NYPD does not care about safety. They are not going to respond. Unless...

A 5-year-old child was killed in Queens yesterday by the driver of a Dodge Ram pickup truck. This is the street where they died. The New York City DOT will insist there's nothing they could have done.

They'll note that they already had painted SCHOOL on the asphalt. What more do you want?

Fair amount of racism in my mentions this morning, plus a bunch of antisemites asking about “the ethnicity of the landlord.”

When this happens, my usual response is: report, block, don’t engage, don’t amplify.

But I thought this was fucking funny… Last night, I get a notification for this tweet from someone called Grug.

Between 1999-2019 in the U.S., Black people were killed in “accidental” residential fires at more than twice the rate of white people. Their deaths are not accidents but the direct result of infrastructural negligence. No matter what started the blaze in the Bronx, our attention should be focused foremost on the residential conditions that made the fire not survivable.
