I cannot support sending Israel more weapons as long as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains in power & I urge the Biden Administration, Israeli government, Hamas & other countries to establish a permanent ceasefire & return of Israeli hostages still in Hamas’ captivity. 1/ The death toll in Gaza has exceeded 21,000 including over 8,000 children and thousands more civilians.

Entire families and ancient communities have been wiped out by Israel’s often indiscriminate bombing, including the use of over 500 unguided 2000 lb bombs. 2/

Despite overwhelming evidence of Attorney General Ken Paxton’s corruption, @DanPatrick and the Texas Republican Senate acquitted him.

So blatantly ignoring the Rule of Law in this case is very dangerous. #KenPaxton #Impeachment Ken Paxton has faced criminal investigations his entire career. Less than a year into his tenure as Texas Attorney General, he was indicted on felony securities fraud charges for soliciting investors for his own financial gain. 2/

One year ago today I found out I had cancer.

I was chairing a conference in Bilbao, Spain and was set to fly home early the next morning.

Traveling back to Bilbao on a dark highway, the driver of our car hit a boar going 70mph.

That boar may have saved my life.

After a few minutes an ambulance came and asked if I wanted to go to the hospital. I almost said no but my hand had started to swell and get red. I figured that, on the chance I’d broken a small bone in my hand, I should probably get it checked out. A quick X-ray, I thought. 2/

(I heard recently from some WBD employees that more layoffs/cuts are coming, including around DEI and social impact efforts).

Warner Bros. Discovery just made another round of layoffs in sports, after calling 2023 a 'rebuilding' year businessinsider.com/warner-bros-di… via @BusinessInsider Not sure if it’s just the entertainment side or @CNN as well.

As a matter of public policy, how has this merger been good for people or business?

Thousands of jobs cut, stock price in half, prices up on product, less diversity, CNN sabotaged.

🧵Today, House Republicans passed their extreme border bill – a cruel and counterproductive piece of legislation that would divert resources away from the border while bringing back the worst immigration policies of the Trump administration. 1/5 Their bill (H.R. 2) would severely restrict asylum at the border and abandon asylum-seekers to the cartels.

If it became law, Ukrainians fleeing from Putin's invasion, Uyghurs escaping genocide in China, and Christians fleeing Iran would all be turned away. 2/5

The Governor of Texas @GovAbbott doesn’t want Texas school kids to learn about the contributions of black, brown, Asian-American or Native Americans. It’s his attempt to whitewash history in service of white supremacy - a teaching of history that’s already pretty whitewashed. 1/ The “basics of learning” to @GovAbbott and Texas conservatives means almost all the heroes in history are white men and no one else did a damn thing worth leaning about in school. Ask yourself: How Latino historical figures did you learn about growing up in TX schools? Two? 2/

"Consumer choice is a bit of a touchy subject for @wbd these days...Last week four lawmakers—@SenWarren, Rep. Castro, @RepCicilline & @RepJayapal—sent a letter to AG Merrick Garland and antitrust chief Kanter calling on them to investigate the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger." "The union, they wrote, seemingly allowed the company to 'adopt potentially anticompetitive practices that reduce consumer choice and harm workers in affected labor markets” (i.e. Hollywood).'"

So far the new @wbd has been outright hostile to content creators, creators of color, new voices trying to break into the industry, etc. The new WBD seems to go out of it’s way to make the company less inclusive while getting rich off the communities they’re sidelining. 1/ And for what? The business model isn’t working. @WBD stock has lost more than 50% post-merger. So stockholders suffer too. After the Batgirl fiasco (completed project dumped for $90M tax break) content creators discussed making WBD their “last look” when pitching studios. 2/

Here’s why this matter: The story of Latino history, culture and contributions to our nation (our narrative/story) has been left out, erased, deleted from the larger American narrative/story. We have been rendered functionally ahistorical in our own nation. 1/ Our history is barely, sometimes only recently, covered in American or state history textbooks. Most Americans couldn’t name 3 Latinos who’ve made an important or significant contribution to America because they were never taught that any of us did anything worth a damn. 2/

Today, the House voted to pass the Fiscal Year 2023 defense budget bill with major investments for our servicemembers, military families, and civilian defense employees.

I’m pleased to share some of the key progress that is on the table this year 👇 (1/9) This year's defense budget gives servicemembers & civilian defense employees a well-deserved raise and codifies a $15 minimum wage for contractors.

To help military families cope with inflation, it also authorizes a new bonus for servicemembers earning less than $45k. (2/9)

This morning, I met with the @FBI about its investigation into the Uvalde shooting. Here’s what I learned: 1. The FBI has mobilized extensive investigative resources to examine the timeline of events in Uvalde and evidence from the scene, working alongside but independent of Texas DPS and the Texas Rangers.

Thanks to @KENS5 for this powerful, important story about how many Mexican-Americans in Texas were robbed of part of their culture.

From 1918-1969 it was illegal to speak Spanish in Texas schools.

The language was literally beaten out of children by their teachers. 1/2 They were taught to believe they were inferior because they and their parents spoke a different language.

As one man describes — it led children to turn against each other— to tell on their classmates who used Spanish in school.

Thanks for the historical context @KENS5 .

San Antonio—if you have family members in Afghanistan, you can contact my office at 210-348-8216 for help.

Several folks with families in Afghanistan have reached out, & my office is working urgently & pushing hard for @StateDept & other agencies to coordinate flights to safety. Right now, the United States’ mission is to safely evacuate all U.S. citizens and help our Afghan allies who helped us over the past 20 years as well as evacuate as many vulnerable people as possible, particularly women and girls.

We need to expediate evacuations immediately.

The power and water outages in Texas have created a situation that’s worse than even the early days of the pandemic. Grocery store, fast food and gasoline lines are longer than ever. Many stores are closed, including pharmacies. 1/ Many vulnerable people can’t eat because they can’t get electricity or water to cook and can’t get on the roads because of the dangerous conditions. At the same time, few orgs are actually delivering food and water to people. 2/

If reports are true, the CDC’s premature release of a quarantined patient carrying the coronavirus into San Antonio raises serious questions about CDC management, protocols and the attentiveness of the Administration to public safety. (1/6)

expressnews.com/news/local/art… While I have confidence in the competence of the medical professionals at the CDC, I am less confident in the decisions made by management, specifically the decision to release symptomatic patients from quarantine to local hospitals...(2/6)

My thoughts on Middle East plan: not inclusive of all parties & dead on arrival. This is the inevitable result of Trump’s approach to the conflict not as a serious diplomatic effort, but as a real estate deal to be negotiated by a developer who happens to be his son-in-law. (1/5) Instead of serving as an honest broker between the two parties, this Administration has spent three years alienating not only the Palestinians, but also Israelis and Americans who are committed to lasting peace through a two-state solution. Today, I led a delegation of members from the
@HispanicCaucus to Brownsville, TX to look at the effects of the President’s Remain in Mexico policy in Matamoros. I want to thank everyone who came with me to highlight this hugely important issue. This is what we found: (1/8) We had a chance to meet with attorney advocates who have been working in tent courts—the judicial process for considering asylum seekers the Trump Administration has set up. Suffice to say, the rule of law is not respected. (2/8)

Our border patrol system is broken. And part of the reason it stays broken is because it’s kept secret. The American people must see what is being carried out in their name. The @HispanicCaucus led a delegation of members of Congress to visit 2 border patrol facilities. Here’s what we found:

At the El Paso Border Patrol Station #1, women from Cuba, some grandmothers, crammed into a prison-like cell with one toilet, but no running water to drink from or wash their hands with. Concrete floors, cinder-block walls, steel toilets.

.@tombrokaw, for a celebrated @NBCNews journalist who spent years chronicling American society you seem stunningly ignorant of the Hispanic community in this country. Unfortunate to see xenophobia pass for elevated political commentary @MeetThePress @tombrokaw @NBCNews @MeetThePress To give some context as to why this matters, in Texas into the 1950s (and perhaps after) Spanish was literally beaten out of children. At many schools if you spoke Spanish you were hit by a teacher — spanked with a ruler or paddle.
