Sit back kids, I’m going to tell y’all a story.

Years ago, during the early days of my tenure as Marvel’s Editor in Chief, one of our competitors decided to get extremely aggressive about poaching our talent by throwing some serious cash around. Now don’t get me wrong, if someone can pay a creator more and lures them away, all’s fair in love and war. But there was a big difference with this particular methodology that I found utterly distasteful and something I’d never seen before in the comics biz.

ATTENTION TRUE BELIEVERS:

I’ve got some awful news, this is going to be a fairly long thread so bear with me.

It’s true, it’s all true! Marvel is only producing a very small handful of straight up super hero adventure stories. But I did some digging and managed to find a few books you might like. So it’s not all bad news.

Admittedly they can be easily overlooked, especially if one listens to the complaints about the “social politics in the MAJORITY of our ENTIRE line.

Last night I touched on this a bit & it's inspired me to tell a story I've never told before in public. My grandfather, newly married, came to the USA from Cuba in order to make a better life for himself and his young wife. He came over before her and then something happened. WWII broke out. He was given a choice, go back to Cuba or serve in the military. The carrot? If he he made it out alive he would be made a citizen. He was already in his mid thirties and in 1943, at 36, he became a US citizen. My grandmother became a citizen 9 years later.

I was about to call it a night, but okay since you're here bear with me.

First, let me start out by saying that I respect you as a veteran and thank you for your service to the safety of our country. As the son and grandson of two vets, I can't say enough about the sacrifice that you guys make. So thank you. That said, I bet there's stuff that we agree on and perhaps more that we don't. But that's life amongst humans.

Well first, congrats on the successful crowdfunding campaign, it's great that everybody's reading comics. With respect to your reply...

NOPE!

He receives insults because he has gone after pros and his reviews have gone beyond mere reviews. He says horrible things, people respond in kind and then he/you say it's because people have said bad things to him. You can continue this narrative of victimization, I attack because I'm being attacked, but where does that end?

I wonder why he's apologizing now? What's changed? Has he had what I like to call a "Comics To Jesus" moment? Maybe he should give back the money he made by profiting off of making fun of Mags and other creators. I don't know Mags, but he went after her livelihood, her passion, a career that she wants to build. Like her work or don't like her work, but the judging of that work should be done on the merits of it, not the fact that she's trans.
