Finnish has "jaa", "juu" and "joo" from Swedish. Traditionally considered "colloquial" (and bad bad Suecisms!), yet you can see "jaa" in the inner sanctum of democracy, the voting display of the Parliament. Why not "kyllä" (which is the modern standard-language ‘yes’)? 1/x
Image The reason is that Finnish has no "traditional" word for ‘yes’. Up to the second half of the 20th century, prescriptive handbooks taught us that the authentic affirmative answer is to repeat the focused word (in the question, marked with the question particle -ko/-kö). 2/x

My favourite story: a Finnish colleague who was going to get married in Germany and needed a certificate of no impediments to marriage. She got the certificate from Finland, but the German authorities wouldn't accept it because the document had no "Rundstempel". Nor accept... > ... her explanation that the Finnish authority at issue only had a square stamp and the concept of "round stamp" plays no role in Finnish legal or clerical practice.
