I'm supposed to be an objective journalist. But I'm going to admit my feelings about the subject of today's story.
I like fog. A lot.
My infatuation led to this project (more of an experience, really, thanks to @nytclimate) and, now, this 🧵 nytimes.com/interactive/20… Some friends think I'm crazy. They hate fog. They tend to be ones who grew up in the foggiest parts of San Francisco or the Bay Area and spent years shivering through summers, and they seem scarred by the experience. 🤷‍♂️

Freestyle skier Oleksandr Abramenko won Ukraine's only medal at the Beijing Olympics. Tonight he sleeps in a Kyiv parking garage with his family.
I asked him to take a photo and send it to me. This is him with his wife, Alexandra, and their 2-year-old, Dmitry. Read the story here.

Let's turn toward women's park skateboarding. This is the event flooded with youth -- 12 of 20 athletes are under 20.
Kokona Hiraki is 12, Sky Brown is 13. Either would become the youngest gold-medalist in history. Misugu Okamoto, 15, is a medal favorite.
Go get your kids. I wrote last week about all this youthfulness from street, so maybe I'll just repost and change the names. nytimes.com/2021/07/26/spo…

Let's do this. I'm at Aomi Urban Sport Park in Tokyo, where sport climbing will soon make its Olympic debut. This evening is the men's qualifications.
Twenty competitors will vie for 8 spots in Thursday's final.
It's hot and humid, but athletes like this wall. For now. Bide your time with this killer interactive, explaining how this all works. Impress your friends and neighbors with all the knowledge you're about to get. nytimes.com/interactive/20…

Hey, North America, who is up? Coming to you from USA-Canada soccer semifinal, about 90 minutes from Tokyo.
Starts in an hour. Grab some coffee or whatever keeps you going. Image Some randomness before things start. This is the home of the Kashima Antlers, a J1 team, and it’s a cool stadium and complex. It held three World Cup matches in 2002.
It holds 42,000. Tonight it will hold about 420 (that’s a guess).

I’m going to tell a story here. First, does anyone remember Valentine’s Day? Feels like a different epoch, right? It was the night my family and I flew out of San Francisco (pictured) for Europe. Big vacation. 1/ Here’s my son the day before. He brought a roller bag of clothes and a Jansport backpack that held a laptop, an iPad, a $185 calculator issued by school, a year of handwritten calculus notes, several chargers, headphones and 5 or 6 cubes, among other things. 2/

It's weird that when I think of Columbine, I think of Owen Nolan, the hockey player. That's what I was doing on this morning 19 years ago. Waiting for Owen Nolan after morning practice. No idea how much that day affects me all these years later. This could ramble... The Avalanche and Sharks were about to start a playoff series. Nolan was an ex-Av, now a Shark. I was a pretty new sports reporter for the Colorado Springs Gazette. I had just moved to the Springs from Littleton.
