You can DREAM about life or you can CONTROL life, but you can’t do both at the same time. Every dream has a bit of ramble to it, it rolls through unplanned territory and unfolds at its own speed. Dreams are always messy. (1 of 15) Control is alluring. The marketing campaign is impressive. If you control every single detail of your life there’s less opportunity to get hurt. And maybe that’s true. The problem is there’s no joy in control, no surprise. You don’t hurt, but you also don’t hope. (2 of 15)

Last week, I went to see my counselor. (A thread)

I’ve gone to counseling on and off since 1999.

It’s wild to think I’ve been workshopping problems, opportunities and the messiness of life for 24 years with a therapist, but I have. (1 of 15) I’ve gone to multiple counselors over the years, not just the same dude for 24 years in some sort of extended Tuesdays with Morrie type deal.

Last week, in our 90-minute session, we were discussing why I was so focused on helping people with their goals. (2 of 15)

Someone committed to fear will never be converted by fact.

Here's why, a thread. (1/6) Fear starts as a feeling and immediately gives you a few options:
1. Process it and learn from it
2. Ignore it and hope it goes away
3. Entertain it

If you ignore it or entertain it, it eventually turns from a feeling into a belief because you listen to it over and over. (2/6)

Fear or faith? A thread about one of the choices we all get to make every day. Last week was weird for all of us. It didn’t have a shape. I never really felt like I knew what day it was or what my proper response was supposed to be. Freak out? Go about business as usual? Something in the middle?

Jenny and I are in Pensacola, FL getting her 90yo grandfather to bring him back to family in Blowing, NC. (He’s all alone down here.) I told him when we were packing that “We need to bring all of your medicine and none of your knives.” When you’re 90, you just start having more knives in your pocket than you probably need. He laughed and then said, “I definitely need to bring this one though.”

(A thread about a watermelon.)

There’s a husband behind this watermelon.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Whenever I see a whole, uncut watermelon at a potluck, I imagine this conversation:⁣⁣
⁣⁣ Wife: Will you please pick something up for the potluck? Could be a fruit tray, brownies, cookies, anything. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Husband: No problem.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
One hour later.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Wife: What did you bring? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Husband: A watermelon.⁣⁣

A thread:
A recent Sports Illustrated article by Greg Bishop told an interesting story about Tom Brady. During college, Brady was worried he might fail in the NFL, so he interned for two summers at Merrill Lynch, learning the insurance industry. At the end of the internship, his boss, Oliver Owens, told Brady he had a future in finance. When Brady said he wanted to try the NFL, his boss told him, "Tom, you're a dime a dozen. You're a clipboard holder, man. You have to start a career. I'll write you a nice referral."
