Being a capital defense attorney is hard. The hours are long, the work is born of tragedy, the stakes are the highest possible, and the pay compared to the effort is low. This is not a profession that one chooses simply to have a job. It is a calling: a calling of strength, a calling of conviction, a calling of sacrifice, a calling of love.

This has been long overdue. I started this series of highlighting black people at Wimbledon and wanted it to go through the fortnight. By day four I realized that there wasn’t that many. Sad, but that’s reality. However, this particular one I delayed. Mostly because it’s hard to put into words the impact Venus has had on Wimbledon and tennis. How do you even begin to explain it? She’s the first Black Woman to become world number 1. Five Wimbledon singles titles (00, 01, 05, 07, 08) and six Wimbledon doubles to her name.

Here’s the “heated exchange” @BenRothenberg said @serenawilliams had w/ a reporter. An exchange where Serena did not once raise her voice or give any indication of anger (when she had every right to) has been coined “heated” and “testy”. It’s no coincidence, though. Ben has often limited black women to racist tropes, whether it’s Serena’s body (he wrote a gross article about Serena’s physique being undesirable to her white counterparts) or likening her to the angry black woman for simply answering a question.
