NEW from me> The recall election aiming to oust Gov. Newsom could make California the next target of right-wing campaigns aiming to discredit results of an election
Maybe it already has

Here's what has been going on and how the process works
usatoday.com/story/news/nat… via @usatoday Already, Trump, Fox News' Tomi Lahren and Larry Elder, the leading GOP candidate to replace Gov. Newsom, have floated the prospect of voter fraud playing a role if Newsom comes out victorious in the Sept. 14 election usatoday.com/story/news/nat…

NEW: In a text to me just now, @laurenboebert denied this allegation made on CNN by @RepCohen that she led a tour before the Capitol attack.
“I did not give any tours between Jan 3rd and 6th,” Boebert says. Here’s more on the claims some Dems are making against GOP colleagues. It’s important to note that no one has offered any concrete evidence or specifically proven any tour group was part of the Capitol riots. Though, this is being investigated 👇

U.S. Capitol on lockdown due to “external security threat.” This was the message sent to all lawmaker offices at the Capitol:

For months tours have been banned at the U.S. Capitol but lawmakers and aides were disregarding the rules and could still sign in guests for such tours.
CNN reports another set of guidance was sent to members. These memos have been sent to lawmakers ahead of every session Here’s what guidance said in November. While it bars tours, the guidance says the Capitol was still open to “official business visitors,” up to *nine* people could be escorted into the Capitol. Image

I’m inside the Capitol for @USATODAY. The aftermath of Trump rioters storming the building is jarring
Glass everywhere, dust blankets the ground, broken benches turned on their side, used medical kit with an IV & AED machine that was used on a woman who was squeezed in the chaos For those who haven’t visited the Capitol, it is not only a secure building, it has a certain decorum. It holds so much history and I’ve always felt a sense of amazement walking around the building.

To see it like this was heartbreaking.

I’m at Freedom Plaza, about a block from the White House, where pro-Trump supporters are holding an election rally and counter protesters are expected. @USATODAY usatoday.com/story/news/nat… I don’t think it’s a stretch to say seeing thousands of Trump supporters in DC like this is uncommon. Their message is clear: Trump’s battle over the election results is vitally important.
“STOP THE STEAL!” and “FOUR MORE YEARS” chants are echoing throughout downtown streets

Pelosi highlighting Supreme Court fight in presser. She criticizes McConnell for signaling a vote on nominee on eve of RBG's death.
"May she rest in peace," Pelosi says. "Any sense of decency? I guess not."
She goes on to highlight healthcare is central to this fight Pelosi says now that CR has passed House, focus is on passing COVID-19 relief -- a goal that appears increasingly out of reach before the election.
She doesn't signal any change in Dem demands for bill but says she hopes to be back "to the table" soon usatoday.com/story/news/pol…

! House Speaker Nancy Pelosi calling the House back in session next week to vote on USPS legislation.
“Lives, livelihoods and the life of our American Democracy are under threat from the President. That is why I am calling upon the House to return to session later this week” Both the House and Senate weren’t scheduled to be back in session or vote on anything until after Labor Day in September.

🚨Big @usatodayDC effort on this one that includes a lot of rich, newsy details on the months-long VP search that led Joe Biden to Kamala Harris -- including interviews w/ Eric Garcetti, Sen. Coons, Reps. Bass, Richmond, Clyburn and a host of sources

Woah. Trump was in the middle of a press conference when he was rushed out of the room. The president returns to podium and tells reporters there was a shooting outside the White House barrier. Secret Service shot a person and they have been taken to the hospital. Trump did not say why the shooting took place, not did he say the condition of the person.

Pelosi, in CNBC interview, appears to signal she'd be OK w/ a Trump executive order ensuring evictions are halted(after moratorium expired)but says more $ needed
"He can do–extend the moratorium and I hope that he does. But you can't just have a moratorium, you have to have money" Pelosi, continued: "What good is it to the landlords if you have a moratorium until the end of the year for people to pay their rent unless there's some money to help pay the rent?"

Pelosi, asked about police reform bills & whether talks have started between chambers, appears frustrated and hits McConnell on Senate failing to move forward on its bill: "The Grim Reaper who is not going to pass any of our bills can’t even pass his own bill” Pelosi was very animated and appeared flustered with a number of reporter questions today on police reform, coronavirus and healthcare. "I'm in a mood because this is a matter of life and death," she said. "And this administration has failed miserably."

Pelosi at presser hitting Republicans for pulling support of FISA, specifically singling out Rep. @Jim_Jordan for the support he’d offered on it before Trump tweeted opposition and threatened to veto it.
