when I was in college I took Intro to Philosophy with this guy named Elliot who was often surrounded by girls, and like three weeks into the term the prof asked if they were enrolled in the course and Elliot, clarifying, said "no they are my guests" he would go around inviting girls to sit in on our class, but we had very limited seating in that room, so eventually a "no guests" policy had to be enacted

the way people hate their daughters is so fucking sad ImageImage any adult who thinks it's ok to treat teenaged girls with disdain is telling you a lot about their own character (rotten!)

really hard for those outside of Texas to understand the structural obstacles to progress. it's not that Texans don't care; it's that our system is one of hostile architecture. it's not that people in red states are a bunch of masochists. a lot of progressives love to describe things as systemic, are chuffed to tell you all about the hegemony--and still don't get how that plays out in Texas, intractable and bleeding.

a man set himself aflame in front of the Supreme Court earlier this year. he was nervy enough to burn all at once. our courts prefer the slow conflagration.

for years my dad has argued that what the world needs is “the travel taco” i.e. a taco with sealed edges to keep all the filling from falling out while you’re on the move. and for years my mom has patiently explained the concept of burritos. my dad is the guy who leans across the table and says “so tell me, what’s the worst part of eating a taco?” at dinner parties

buckled beneath a headache, which means that today is the day for the cat to knock everything off my desk, climb into the fridge, hoist herself by curtains..... pray for me everything between my forehead and the common area is pain. time for the cat to implicate herself within the laundry basket

can you imagine spending years telling young men that God has something better for them, then turning around and selling merch premised on r*pe jokes how polluted does your mind have to be to uplift sexual assault as a means of justice and a comedic stunt

I saw people saying that Girl Meets World imports the worst sort of American piety and for a second I thought we were talking about Elizabeth Bruenig again idk why our most venerable newspaper finds goofs compelling enough to put on payroll, but the op-ed stable is very bad

when my cousin was in high school he won a welding competition at the county fair so they put him on the local news and the reporter asked which of his heroes he’d like to meet someday and my cousin responded “I already know enough people” I always thought my cousin was such a great writer because he would recite all these rap verses he was working on and they were so clever and then years and years later I realized he had been plagiarizing Eminem the whole time

the thing that’s important to remember, I think, is that the people who want to wrest away choice and legal abortions aren’t a confused and clamoring mob—they’re folks who know better Westboro Baptists are rowdy about how pretty much everyone is going to hell, but it’s folks like Karen Swallow Prior who do more lasting harm re: choice, imo, because they can utter the same nonsense within the respectable quarters of Christian academia
