My dad taught history so, yes, it's important to understand the history of Worldcon & the Hugos. It matters to see what won in the past but also WHAT DIDN'T WIN & why, & that's the part that gets left out in these long winded diatribes which are about status & power, not history. It matters to see what works and writers didn't get into the conversation presided over by the self appointed insiders and old guard. The ones not deemed "notable" enough. Because that pattern of erasing & ignoring influences how we see the modern sff landscape too.

Any world of fiction, whether set in this world or a secondary world, has to be built. The writer makes choices of what goes in & what is ignored/unseen.
If I were going to ask writers to focus on 1 thing it would be seriously examine the network of relationships between people
1 Wiktionary defines "secondary world" as "An internally consistent, fictional, fantasy world or setting that is different from the real "primary world."

I sometimes see the idea that world building is only done with secondary worlds in sffh (science fiction, fantasy, horror)

WIth a whole lot of old & even some new school writing advice it is strikingly clear the person giving the advice never had (or hasn’t had) to be responsible for the caretaking and emotional support of others, and what that means in terms of curating energy and time. So here is some of my writing advice:

1. Be kind to yourself. Sometimes you won’t get the work done you want to do because of circumstances outside your control or just because you are so tired. It’s okay. Really, it’s okay. Don’t beat up on yourself. You’re doing your best.

I'm hoping to do a "World-building Wednesday" thread here every Wednesday, but realistically I won't manage it regularly until long distance season (outrigger canoe paddling) is over.
However I want to say a few words today about The Black God's Drums by @pdjeliclark
#WBWSFF Our recent hurricane scare here in Hawaii made this lovely novella seem EXTRA topical (it was always topical). #WBWSFF

Here it is:
