Today Museum of Kenyan Architecture celebrates Kenya's First Woman President of the Architectural Association, Arch. Emma Miloyo. She served as the President of AAK from 2017. Emma is a Partner at Design Source. She is married to Architect Chris Naica, with 3 children.@EmmaMiloyo
She attended Loreto Msongari Primary School + the Kenya High School. She studied architecture at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture (First Class Honours) in 2006.

Historical interlude: Stella Awinja Hall, University of Nairobi. This building is named after one of the most dynamic students to ever walk through the University of Nairobi, Stella Awinja Muka. She was a Third Year student of engineering, successful actress, poet, among others.
Stella was crushed to death by boulders falling from the construction of Lilian Towers on University Way as she waited to cross the Road into the Engineering Faculty at University of Nairobi. She was awarded a posthumous (aegrotat) degree in 1984 by the University of Nairobi.

OLDEST SCHOOLS IN KENYA. 1. RABAI MISSION - The Church Mission Society missionaries Ludwig Kraft and Johannes Rebman interacted with locals in the coastal town of Mombasa and set the earliest mission school in the country at Rabai in 1846. 2. NAIROBI SCHOOL. The Prince of Wales School was built in 1902 for the sons British workers who settled in Nairobi after construction of the Uganda railway.

KISUMU CITY is one of the oldest settlements in Kenya. It had been dominated by diverse communities long before Europeans arrived. The people from the Nandi, Kalenjin, Kisii, Maasai, Luo and Luhya communities converged at the place "sumo", i.e a place of barter trade.
The Luo called it "Kisumo" = "a place to beg for food".
The Luhya called it "Abhasuma" = "a place to borrow food".
The Abagusii called it "egesumu" = "a structure for keeping/rearing chicken".
The Nandi called it "Kisumett" = a place where food Is found during times of scarcity

Tallest buildings in Kenya. The four tallest buildings in Kenya are the Britam Tower (200), Nairobi GTC Centre (184metres), UAP Old Mutual Tower (163metres) and Nairobi Times Tower (140metres). The interesting fact is Triad Architects was involved in the design of all of them.
BRITAM TOWER. The tower is owned by British-American Investments Company (Britam). The skyscraper has a maximum height of 195 metres, above ground, with 32 usable floors. it was designed by GAPP Architects RSA / Triad Architects Kenya.

ALL SAINTS CATHEDRAL ARCHITECT - Temple Lushington Moore was the architect. He is famed for a series of Gothic Revival churches built between about 1890 - 1917. He was a Grand Master among the Freemasons, known for his Gothic predilection. The church was also built by Freemasons.
WHITES ONLY CHURCH - It was conceptualised in 1914 at a meeting chaired by Governor Henry Conway + addressed by the Archbishop of Cape Town. Chaplain Reverend W. Falloon had suggested the building of a Whites-only church to replace St Stephen’s Church, which was not big enough.

HISTORICAL INTERLUDE - THERE IS A STAGE ON THIKA ROAD CALLED "ALLSOPS" - here is the story.
It was the original home of Allsopps Pilsner and White Cap. It was built in 1938 by Taylor and Company Brewery.
Taylor and Company Brewery was the main competitor to Kenya Breweries, which had been established in Nairobi’s Ruaraka plains in 1922 by George and Charles Hurst — the two brothers who were initially based in Kitale as farmers.

CITY HALL NAIROBI - The old Nairobi Town hall was a wood and iron one-storey building. The Municipality then moved to the second location, from 1913 to 1923, a wood and metal building. A new town hall designed by Howard Archer (Cobb, Archer & Ass) was built in 1934.
The new Town hall was opened in the same week as the Law Courts (designed by Sir Baker & Hoogterp) during the Silver Jubilee Celebrations in May 1935.

RICHARD LEAKEY & DANIEL LIBESKIND TURKANA (NGAREN) MUSEUM - UNBUILT. Daniel Libeskind's New York designed this museum in Turkana, Kenya, modeled on the earliest hand tools used by humans to make carvings.
The museum is intended to provide an "unprecedented educational and scientific experience", covering two million years of human history. It will track evolution, biodiversity, overpopulation, war, disease, the effects of climate change and the pivotal role of Africa.

NAIROBI NATIONAL MUSEUM was initiated in 1910 by the East Africa and Uganda Natural History Society [currently the East African Natural History Society (EANHS)], who needed a place to keep and preserve their collections of various specimens. It moved locations 3 times.
The first site for the museum was at the present Nyayo House, which later became too small and a larger building was put up in 1922 where the Nairobi Serena Hotel stands today.

OBITUARY: PROF. P.G. NGUNJIRI, FAAK
The architecture fraternity in Kenya mourns the passing on of Prof P.G.Ngunjiri, a Fellow Member of the Architectural Association of Kenya and the Director at Conte Design.
Philip. G. Ngunjiri founded the Department of Architecture, JKUAT (1990), the School of Architecture and Building Sciences,(2001) + was the first Chancellor of Maasai Mara University (2013-2018).
