The mass worker protests at Zhengzhou Foxconn offers a great example to understand three go-to methods that censors use suppress information about dissent in China.

First, and most obvious, search results for "Zhengzhou Foxconn" have been thoroughly scrubbed of protest info. Second, any popular hashtag mentioning Zhengzhou Foxconn will be closely managed. One of the only hashtags remaining highlights that workers received compensation but doesn't explain why.

It only has one post visible, yet Weibo's own stats indicate there should be hundreds.

After many months of data collection, today we have released the China Dissent Monitor (CDM), a @freedomhouse project tracking protest & other dissent in the PRC.

We've recorded 735 events since June 2022: chinadissent.net

Thread on early findings⤵️ Based on initial analysis of 668 events between June and September, 95% occurred offline, such as demonstrations, strikes, and occupations. CDM prioritizes offline collective action but has a sample of other types of dissent. These protests are widespread, as the map illustrates.

Coding hundreds of tweets & using a machine learning tool, I have preliminary evidence which suggests the PRC government is conducting a new effort on Twitter to amplify genocidal language & generate the perception of Chinese ultranationalism toward Taiwan.

Findings below:

[1] Brief rewind: a week ago, I shared the trend below, demonstrating a sudden increase in 2020 on Twitter of the genocidal phrase 留岛不留人 (“keep the island, rid of its people”).

It raises the question: is the trend state-backed or an organic outpouring of ultranationalism?

Collating tweets, I’ve found an alarming increase in the use of a genocidal phrase on Twitter by Chinese ultranationalists toward Taiwan, especially in 2020.

[1] 留岛不留人 (literally “keep the island, rid of its people”) advocates mass atrocities against Taiwanese. Often accompanied by 武统 “unification through invasion,” 杀光台湾人”murder all TWese,” or 核平台湾 “nuke TW.”

Between 2017-19, its frequency increased 470% on Twitter.

Here's a textbook use of human rights false equivalence (as well as personal attacks against @xu_xiuzhong)

Sympathizers of authoritarian regimes like to point at human rights abuses in liberal states but will nearly always fail to mention the capacity of... people to observe, report, & organize on human rights in their own country. Chinese & Uyghurs need outside orgs like @ASPI_org to make reports like the one linked below because if any NGO in China did the work they'd promptly be shuttered & jailed.
