The Axiomatic War being Waged Against You 🧵

This will be a long thread. But it’s an important one. So please bookmark this to save it. There will be some light theory but I will keep it minimal and try to keep the thread as accessible as possible. There’s also a vital ‘call to action’ at the end of the thread. If you’ve been wondering how you can help but feel helpless, have a look at that call to action and see what parts you can do.

So what is an Axiom? (Light theory part)

See this sign =? Basic right? in Maths it’s a common notion that both sides of that equation equal out. So X = Y. That is so self-evident that we have generally agreed that we don’t need to keep investigating what the = sign is. In Maths and the hard sciences, axioms are pivotal to build complex theories that reveal the nature of the world.

For us, without realising it, we build these common frames all the time. These become our own axioms that help us inform the world. Here is one. I am a human, you are a human. That means, our lives both have equal value. Hypothetically, if I were a rat or a cockroach say, you might decide, hang on a minute, maybe I don’t have the same value as you. But let’s get to that a bit later.

Logic

There are many theories of logic, but the one I feel most useful to us in this context is by Quine (1908-2000). He wrote about how all of our axioms, our assumptions about the world form a web of belief. The totality of this knowledge forms a web (each node being one of our beliefs).

Changes to this web, even the outermost parts, impact our core sets of assumptions. But being the people that we are, we don’t tend to change wholesale our opinions every time new facts come to life. Our webs, retract and regenerate.

So for example, if you discover a country is ‘bad’, you naturally won’t assume all countries are bad. But also in addition, you may decide to narrow your reconfiguration down so it’s just a state, a government, or even just a person. This way, your core beliefs don’t really have to change. You don’t have to re-evaluate everything and you continue on with your day.

Sometimes, our core set of beliefs is challenged so profoundly, that we undergo a conversion, a paradigm shift. And everything starts anew. You can sometimes see these revolutions in people. In fact, as an aside, this is why religious converts can be so vulnerable. Because they choose to cut all ties to the previous truths they knew, they start to create new webs and are hungry for axioms to help inform themselves and can be less critical than they later are when they are exposed to new sets of beliefs. If you’ve read this far, let’s get to the meat of the thread.

What are Israel’s axioms?

The heart is “Israel is like other countries”.

What does this mean? At it’s core, that it is Normal, Secular, Liberal and Democratic.

What you are witnessing in Palestine currently is Step 9 'extermination' (i.e. 10k dead so far, deprival of food, water, medicine and shelter to survivors) and Step 10 'denial' (such as through denying atrocities and mocking victims).
