For years, ANN–brain comparisons relied on forward predictivity:
"How well do model features predict neural responses?"
✅ Good for identifying brain-like models.
❌ But it ignores whether ANN representations themselves are recoverable from the brain.
Result: Two models can look equally “brain-like” while being internally very different.
