The Pope's Louisiana Genealogy: After a quick perusal, about half the census records vacillate between white and mulatto regarding the Pope's matriarchal grand-parents born in Louisiana. One great-great-grand-parent, Aristide Baguie, owned two female slaves in New Orleans.

His four matriarchal great-grand-parents are listed as Mulatto, all born in Louisiana.

Of his eight great-great-grandaparents:
one couple were both white, born in France;
the next Mulatto/Black, born in St. Landry, Louisiana; the next, both Mulatto born in Louisiana,
the last couple, more difficult to find. I'll search later.
Only one mention of Haiti, that was later changed to LA. The Pope's great-great-grandmother, Maria Ramos Martinez, found on a Haiti ships list, was born in Louisiana as a citizen the United States, c. 1826. She traveled to Haiti at the age of 37, per the manifest, she was not from Haiti,
