What’s crazy to me… is the Legislative building here in Wa was “constructed” 100 years ago. In only 6 years

1922-1928, although they began working inside the building in May of 1927. So… 5 years

Have you ever heard of The Iroquois Confederacy?

A union of six Native American nations (Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora) in the Northeast, had a sophisticated system of governance that predated the Constitution by centuries!

Their Great Law of Peace, an oral tradition codified in wampum belts, established a federal system where member nations retained autonomy while cooperating under a central council. This council, composed of representatives chosen by the tribes, made decisions by consensus, balancing power among the nations.

In the mid-18th century, figures like Benjamin Franklin & Thomas Jefferson had contact with Iroquois leaders & were reportedly impressed by their ideas of unity and balanced governance. Franklin, for instance, observed Iroquois diplomacy during treaty negotiations and later referenced their confederation in his writings. In 1754, he proposed the Albany Plan of Union, an early attempt to unite the American colonies, which some suggest drew inspiration from the Iroquois model. Although the Albany Plan failed, it foreshadowed the federal structure later adopted in the Constitution.
