We're a bad team right now, but tonight has the potential to be a turning point depending on how the team handles it going forward.

A few positives to build off of...

1. AD shot 10/11 from the free throw line. He's been in a prolonged slump from there for quite some time... ...so after missing the first one, seeing him hit 10 straight was great. That's something he's done when he's feeling right. I actually thought he was too amped up tonight, which led to him missing a lot of bunnies around the rim. This was one of his best rebounding games in...

For as big as the team is in the front court, this is an example of how our guards can get overpowered sometimes. McLemore is trying to prevent the rip through by ball pressuring Luka, but Luka just powers through him and rejects the screen anyway. Redick comes off an Iverson cut and that flows into a ball screen for Brunson. Marc is hanging in a drop coverage instead of blitzing, and while THT provides good back pressure, Brunson goes around Marc's contain for the layup.

Dallas' offense is especially pick & roll heavy, and you'll rarely ever see a game that has such a stark difference between what the team can be on defense in their best moments, but also their worst.

This will be a slow thread of our pick & roll defense over the next day. Dennis is leaning on Luka’s hip and Andre is showing high, which indicates that the plan is to let Luka use this screen and then trap him. But Dennis doesn't have enough of his body between Luka & the basket, giving him an open lane. AD picks up on this though, and rotates over..

Miami does an extraordinary job of capitalizing on defensive mistakes, and the Lakers made quite a few of them in Game 5. Here's a thread of plays where they capitalized on our inattention.

On this play, Danny Green turns his head and Duncan Robinson loses him on the relocation. Rajon Rondo is focused on telling Kuz to run back in transition, and in doing so he doesn't pick up Robinson. These step-in 3's are high percentage looks, and especially harmful because of the size discrepancy. Rondo's closeout won't bother Robinson at all if it's late.

The homie @RealRicardoN put it perfectly last night. Chick Hearn would be roasting this organization every night on air if he was alive. He’d light the team up for their fuckery DURING THE SHOWTIME YEARS, I can’t imagine what he’d be saying now. 1/ That got me thinking back to the old days, with Chick, Dr. Buss, Jerry West, Pat Riley, Magic (on the court), Kareem, and others. There were a lot of grown ass people in this organization who commanded respect. These days we only have one person like that - LeBron. 2/

THREAD: I have conflicting emotions about the trade deadline passing w/o an AD trade. I’m relieved that the Lakers didn’t trade everything for him. I understand why you’d want to pair two of the best players in the NBA, but doing that in this manner isn’t sustainable, IMO. 1/ That said, the Lakers did a poor job of handling these negotiations & playing the corresponding media game. One of the common themes we’ve heard is that New Orleans wasn’t particularly interested in making a deal. 2/

This is a long Brandon Ingram thread

One of the first videos I ever made (which has since been blocked) was “How Brandon Ingram Fits In w/the Lakers” leading up to the 2016 NBA Draft. It was 26 minutes long. 😂 1/ He was a good scorer in college at 17ppg, but he wasn’t an electric one. He was the second-leading scorer on Duke to Grayson Allen, who was a sophomore. By comparison, RJ Barrett is averaging 24ppg and Zion Williamson is at 20ppg this season. 2/

THREAD: Prior to yesterday’s game, Lonzo Ball averaged 54.8 touches per game. Yesterday he had 106. To give you a basis of comparison, De’Aaron Fox averages 80.2 touches per game and LeBron James averages 79.9. 1/ Lonzo’s touches alongside LeBron are probably fewer than 54.8 as a practical matter, due to how many times his job is to just bring the ball up to throw the initiation pass for an offensive set, which is a scenario where a touch isn’t really an opportunity. 2/

Quick thread w/some Laker observations from Vegas:

Svi is an even better shooter than I thought he was. He’s not just hitting standstill 3’s, he’s going up on balance after being on the move, w/his upper body leaning in one direction or another, etc. These are advanced shots. 1/ Svi’s biggest issue as a shooter is knowing how to use screens & run counters. If he gets an open shot, he’s probably gonna knock it down, but needs to improve at getting open more often. Lock him in the film room w/a coach & some Klay tape & you’ll have a damn good shooter. 2/
