This photo is a microcosm of Israel. Image The pro Israeli authority figure allows the young Palestinian they have authority over to exist as a guest unless they resist injustice through non-violent means. When that happens, the home becomes a security state and the Palestinian is silenced through physical assault and the threat of state violence.

I don’t think enough people realize that Israel does *NOT* have the right to withhold Palestinian human rights. Not for any reason under the sun. Not for a state, nor a vote, nor a law-they are breaking the law every single for moment they are withholding human rights. Daily. Any argument that begins with any justification for the withholding of human rights is an argument for oppression. Any argument whatsoever. There is no valid argument. Not one.

When the next round of violent Palestinian response happens, everyone will pretend to forget what Israel did this past week in Gaza and act like it’s incomprehensible that these brown savages have such random bloodlust. But don’t call that violence inevitable. Don’t even say it’s a tragic loss of innocent life, that it’s beyond awful, but still inevitable. Because then you’re siding with the terrorists.

The stunning diversity of Libyans erased under Gaddafi was made apparent to me with the Arab Spring: Not just Arab - Libyans are also Amazigh, Tuareg, Toubou, Greek, Circassian, Italian, Turkish, a multitude of indiginous and diaspora communities. Some info on Tebu Libyans, traditionally nomadic, black tribes also in Chad, Sudan, & Niger, and Tuareg Libyans, nomadic, pastoralist tribes spread across the Saharan regions of Libya, Algeria, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

And no woman should. Hijab like prayer and fasting is an act of faith. With coercion, it stops being faith and becomes authoritarian rule, oppression of the people. Which is exactly why an authoritarian state would impose it. It’s about control, not faith. I stand by every Iranian woman (or any woman) who fights for the right to not wear hijab. It is the same right that protect my choice to wear it.
