Racial Slavery Denialism in 2024: Elon Musk’s “we were all slaves” reactionary position which does not argue that the transatlantic slave trade did not happen, but instead infers that it does not matter and that it has no legacy to understand, accept or reckon with. This is akin to saying something like “we all have ancestors who killed in wars and who died in wars” when you are trying to discuss the Holocaust. That’s how casual this denialism is.

Murray is deliberately conflating nationalism and ethno-nationalism here. He is a supporter of Orbán’s ethno-nationalist anti-immigration regime in Hungary and is obsessed with limiting migration to Britain and Europe, describing multiculturalism as “death.” Murray: “Europe is committing suicide.”

Nazi Rally (NY, 1939): “[we began] to decay the moment affluence and a consequent suicidal Liberalism brought about a lowering of racial barriers permitting an increasing degree of alien influence upon the Culture in question...”

"The fascist project was to remake human beings into a new kind of ruthless, hard, pitiless entity [and] to expunge humanitarianism from the political system and from people’s consciences." - Richard J. Evans The far-right use economic and social grievances to find common ground with potential recruits as part of the radicalisation process. They’ve done so every year post-Nuremberg. This is what they do and they can thrive in a moral vacuum.

I keep seeing these takes about Irish people “not counting” as white in U.S. history and honestly, there is nothing historical about such a claim. The Irish were included in the ‘white’ column of every colonial census going back to Stapleton’s Leeward Islands survey in the 1670s. ImageImage An Irish immigrant's "white" socio-legal status was ensured by a U.S. Statute passed in 1790 which established a "uniform rule of naturalisation" for "any alien, being a free white person.”

Image Fascism and ethno-nationalism have always been international ideologies.
Nazism itself was partly influenced by the work of American white supremacists, eugenicists and official racist immigration policies.

The latest far-right conspiracy theorist to push the “Irish slaves” line is the Musk-promoted racist and anti-semitic extremist E. Michael Jones. Jones has previously described the Civil Rights Movement to end racial segregation as a “Jewish war on the South.” Image He has over 47k followers and being Musk-ticked, his anti-semitic output is promoted and prioritised by the Twitter algorithm. No surprise that he also promotes Gemma O’Doherty’s brand of ethno-nationalist ‘great replacement’ hate literature. Image

It really is amazing how reactionary and shallow Elon Musk truly is. When asked to explain a nonsensical phrase he used online he states that “[it means] you can’t question anything” and then provides a vague and purely anecdotal ‘cancel culture’ tale about George Washington. The mumbled George Washington example is an intentional inversion of the actual reality and history of how his slave ownership was not sufficiently acknowledged by the nationalist narratives/myth making at public history sites, memorials and by the U.S. education system.

George Berkeley: "It would be of advantage to the [slave masters]" to convert their slaves to Christianity as "Gospel Liberty [is consistent] with temporal Servitude; and [their] Slaves would only become better Slaves by being Christians." (1725) Great working paper here on Berkeley’s Legacies at Trinity by @amhuss27, Ciaran O’Neill and @SpeakerConolly. I’m particularly stunned by the tired moral relativist arguments by some of those who wish to retain the name. tcd.ie/seniordean/leg…

Context: British taxpayers subsidised British slave trading companies, slave forts, slave plantations and paid £20 million in reparations to *slaveowners* in 1834. Daniel O'Connell MP: "If money is to be given, give it to the wretched slaves; but do not give it to the men who hold a lash over the backs of their fellow creatures. I protest against remuneration to the planters in principle - I protest against it in practice."

This one continues to circulate so let’s assess it briefly. So yes, many thousands of Europeans were made captives & slaves in North Africa. But the claim of “one million white Europeans” enslaved by Barbary corsairs comes from the flawed work of Robert C. Davis. This claim is so popular among the far-right that it has become a meme that they frequently use in their attempts to negate the history & legacy of the transatlantic slave trade. They invoke the Barbary slave trade in the same way that Neo-Nazis use Dresden.

This confused letter abuses the history of the horrific Cromwellian massacre at Drogheda in an effort to depict transportation as an "Irish slave trade" comparable to the transatlantic slave trade. We've been here before but once more into the breach I guess. Firstly let's put this into context. The first Irish troops banished to the Anglo-Caribbean as indentured servants after capture during the War of the Three Kingdoms were not those who survived at Drogheda.

One of the most depressing aspects of the current “Evil Literature” censorship movement in Ireland is that they are targeting the reading materials for one of the most sensitive demographics that use the public library system. A visit to a local library is their break from a heavily structured secondary school curriculum. They enter a space where they can be more independent and have more autonomy in choosing what to read or do.

The Gardai enforce the laws of the state. Harris has been an elected legislator for 12 years. Currently the law puts an individual’s right to property above another individual’s right to housing. Hence ‘no fault’ evictions. If only someone had the power to change this. By way of comparison, even the *Tories* in Britain are planning on abolishing Section 21 ‘no fault’ evictions. This means that landlords will need to issue a Section 8 notice instead if they wish to regain possession of their property. gov.uk/government/pub…

In 1850 there were at least 724 different slave owners in the U.S. with the surname Evans and they enslaved thousands of African Americans in Virginia, Georgia, S. Carolina, N. Carolina, Alabama, Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, Louisiana and Mississippi. Of these *126* were named Jonathan or John Evans.

If the convicted felon Jonathan Derrick Evans could provide some evidence of Irish ancestry back to the 1650s I would be interested in seeing it.

Thanks to everyone for their kind words. I wish this wasn’t happening but the choice has been made for us. We were sold out and I now refuse to countenance giving this Musk-poisoned company my free labour/content. Let’s all catch up over on Mastodon. You can find me here. I spent the day on it yesterday. Took a while to get the hang of it but it was a lovely experience. Join us. mastodon.ie/@Limerick1914
