Heartbroken over the story of the mother who died holding her child’s stroller at the bottom of these subway steps last night. I am covering it today - and every parent I talk to agrees — it’s a terrifying part of raising babies in this city.
A minute after taking this photo, on my way back up the stairs we ran into a young mom with two-year-old twins asleep in a double stroller. She was about to try to carry it all on her own! (I helped her of course but it was still hard for the two of us! come on, @MTA.)

Yesterday at PS 199 -- one of the whitest and wealthiest public schools in the city that was embroiled in a bitter racially charged rezoning fight two years ago -- parents once again yelled at the DOE for a diversity proposal seeking to make local middle schools more equitable.
The proposal isn't perfect -- and some parents had very fair questions and suggestions -- but it devolved, with arguments like "many of us spent thousands of dollars in tutoring to boost our kids test scores, and they should get into good schools!"
