A thread

Yesterday during the Sitting of the House of Representative my colleague @FitzJacksonpnp1 questioned the Minister of Finance @NigelClarkeJa about the new KYC accounts and how that has been affecting the income stream of banks.

jamaica.loopnews.com/content/2500-f… Fitz posed this question against the backdrop that in previous years banks have made in excess of 50B in revenue just from fees alone.

These fees the Minister purported are needed for the successful operation of the bank based on the cost to do business in Jamaica.

On March 22, 2022, the UK Daily Mail published articles that purported that I 'shunned' the Duchess of Cambridge. The global media frenzy which followed was deeply concerning, as at no time during our pleasant exchanges would I have needed to 'shun' her.

dailymail.co.uk/femail/article… The world is interconnected, & what may seem like fun and games to one party can cause significant damage to people's lives & reputations, especially when we position them as the protagonist to further manipulative agendas and readerships.

Today I welcomed Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge Kate to Jamaica 🇯🇲 on behalf of the Leader of the Opposition in celebration of the Queen’s platinum Jubilee. We had a very interactive and pleasant conversation throughout the proceedings as we talked about family, our cultures and our people.

Jamaica has the 2nd highest murder rate for women globally, 30% of our women experience physical violence, 70% of our girls under 18 who have been victims of crime say they have been raped, 1 in every 4 women report intimate partner violence. Too many of our women also cannot afford to live and provide for their children. The pandemic made matters worse as 53% lost income and employment.

Agriculture can grow our economy, but we need to pick winners to compete globally & coffee is one of these winners.

Why then are we not investing more ? Coffee is the second most popular beverage globally after water, and the second most traded commodity after oil.

Every day close to 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed worldwide.

Perhaps when you saw me “casually driving”, I was en route to my constituency.

MPs were asked to volunteer to be absent from the ceremonial opening in a effort to reduce the numbers in the chambers amid the pandemic, so I volunteered. I utilized the day to check on a few projects that I have ongoing.

One of the major ones a construction project for single mothers who are currently in need their own home. Image

Has the National Housing Trust @TheNHT been betraying our Trust ?

The (NHT) was established in 1976 by PM Michael Manley as Jamaica's national mortgage institution to provide financial assistance to low-income Jamaicans desirous of building, buying, or upgrading a home. That mandate has been funded through 2% salary deductions from employees & voluntary contributions from individuals considered self-employed, as well as a 3% contribution from employers mandated by law.

With such easy access to capital how can they fail ?

The role of MPs to the 🇯🇲 people is as clear as mud and we have not made it any easier when we parade care packages & road works as the benchmark.

What will be our legacy at the end of this term? what will we be measured by as I refuse to be Mrs. Claud

jamaica-gleaner.com/article/news/2… At the end of this term both the PNP & the JLP would have had a 50/50 split at the helm of running this country so let’s end the blame game.

It’s time for us to press RESET and put the legislative agenda at the forefront; moving away from doing what’s popular to what’s right!

On Tuesday I made my contributions to the parliamentary constituency debate where I tackled the issues of how we allocate what’s seemingly the scare resource of water in rural constituencies.

It’s time we learn the rubric that’s used to determine who’s next in line. It took almost a decade of advocacy from my team to get water for the people of Higgin Town which finally commenced last October.

This I would wish on no other MP as water is essential to life yet the @NWCjam continues not to share a timeline for many more of these projects.

Last year we imported close to US$30 mil of chicken back & turkey neck, most of which was resold at JM$150 lb. The US has no market for it so it's usually 'dumped' here

Interestingly a whole chicken in the US sells at 0.97 per lb / 145.50JMD compared to $230 per lb in our stores Is it that we really can’t afford chicken or have we been focused on producing something locally when we are uncompetitive.

These prices are likely to go up since world market grain prices are increasing, it’s time for us to revisit our import substitution policies.
