#SupremeCourt quashes rape on false promise of marriage case filed by an actress against Tamil Director-Producer Seeman, in light of affidavits by both parties agreeing to put a quietus on the matter.

Bench: Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice R Mahadevan. Seeman in his affidavit tendered an unconditional apology, withdrew allegations made against the actress, and undertook not to attempt to contact her.

The actress in her affidavit withdrew her complaint/FIR against Seeman.

Former CJI Justice UU Lalit criticised the lack of guidelines for imposing the punishment of community service under the new penal law, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

He was delivering a lecture organised by SCBA on "BNS 2023 and IPC 1860: Continuity, Change and Challenges. J Lalit: for defamation the punishment is 2 years of prison, or fine, or both, or community service. But there are no guidelines as to how much community service. If it is 2 years of prison does it mean 2 years of community service?
