~1 yr ago, we called on @NIH to #FundBlackscientists. The community's response was inspiring. ~50 other publications has since followed. The NIH director acknowledged the longstanding disparity was wrong. Then... well... silence. Why should we care?

cell.com/cell/fulltext/… When Black scientists are underfunded their perspective is lost. "The people who get to do the science determine the science that gets done" Let's stop pretending we don't bring our social perspective to bench. It's why we have racial healthcare disparity.

URM researchers less likely to get NIH funds, have smaller networks and fewer sponsorships than nonminority counterparts (21). But, URM researchers contribute to scientific innovation at high rates, i.e., “the diversity-innovation paradox in science” (22) stm.sciencemag.org/content/13/584… "URM researchers are routinely called upon to devote more hours toward service to their departments and institutions than their peers. This service burden for URM researchers at academic medical centers is known as the “minority tax” (24)."
