Panorama's attack on ebikes tonight () nails some of issues but little of solutions. Our view:
1. ebikes are brilliant. They enable a far wider range of people to cycle more journeys, which is vital for public health, climate and road danger outcomes... 1/7bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episod… Panorama confuses legal with illegally-modified ebikes & ignores their benefits compared to UK's car use. If we switched lots of cars for ebikes in UK we’d see health, crime, road danger & climate benefits, not the tabloid, crime-ridden, apocalyptic vision Panorama paints... 2/7

🧵 Tonight @TowerHamletsNow Council decides the future of #TowerHamlets Low Traffic Neighbourhoods

LEAVING ASIDE air pollution, road danger & the climate crisis (!!!) we're also really concerned about this from a 💰💰💰 perspective 1/9 Image Background: @AspireParty was elected last May & wants to rip out all existing low traffic schemes. They’ve run two consultations costing £100,000… but results KEEP coming back with residents in favour of keeping the schemes 👀 2/9

This is a spicy idea that up-ends the current system of road crossing in which pedestrians and cycle traffic have to 'beg' traffic to stop by pushing a button and waiting - which can be an agonising delay

LTN 1/20 is the document published by @transportgovuk and @grantshapps as part of the #GearChange strategy last summer, which sets out guidance for quality and safety standards for infrastructure that enables safe, convenient and enjoyable cycling. Image LTN 1/20's first anniversary is next month. The document establishes baseline quality criteria for infrastructure changes. We're hopeful that since the document has now been 'on the scene' for long enough, new schemes from local government will be compliant.

Women shouldn’t experience fear, harassment or harm on our streets. This has to stop, and creating safer and welcoming streets will be part of that. This is especially important when it comes to walking, cycling or taking public transport, which we must enable more people to choose. Inclusive streets have to prioritise these transport choices, & the space needed for them.

1/7 We have serious concerns about this council report for next week’s decision on the #KensingtonHighStreet cycle lanes. Why? Its tone is biased, it has errors, and it considers ‘doing nothing’ a valid option for this dangerous road.

rbkc.gov.uk/committees/Doc… 2/7 The report is biased *against* the cycle lanes. Eg some public misconceptions (cyclists don’t pay road tax!) are reported without comment, while supportive comments (cycling is better for climate!) are questioned.
