As a Central Bank geek, what this *could* mean is interesting... (short thread)
As of last week, Russia's central bank had reserves of $643 billion dollars. cbr.ru/eng/hd_base/mr…
The bank produces breakdowns of that number on a monthly basis, and at the end of Jan, about $500 bn of that was *not* gold cbr.ru/eng/hd_base/mr…

When the @ecb's Pandemic Emergency Purchase Program was originally announced, it was to be €750 bn by the end of 2020.
The guys in the ECB's buying department nailed that number.. @ecb They'll have to pick up the pace a little though, as they have another €600 billion to spend by the end of June

Amazing paper from @ecb researchers this morning.
The paper talks about central bank independence, which is fine. But then at the end it decides to rate a selection of central banks.
(which obviously I am now going to do a thread on)
First off, obviously, is the ECB itself.
And, clearly the central bank held up the mirror and liked very much what it saw

A trillion here, a trillion there and soon we'll be talking about real money.
But, there is a really good reason why the amounts of money being thrown at the problem are so large (yea, this is a thread)
For those of you who remember the financial crisis and the (often controversial) bank bailouts, the reason policy makers were so willing to countenance writing such large cheques/checks was because they so feared the consequences of a banking system collapse...
