The World Wide Web had the potential to be the greatest tool for discussion and knowledge and learning since the invention of writing and printing, and it got gutted and killed for precisely that reason Corporations and governments carry most of the blame, but the attitude people had of “once it’s on the internet, it’s there forever” did a lot to make people complacent and eschew solid archival or backups. Nothing lasts forever, but so much has been lost in just a decade or two!

This ties in with how so many games can no longer be self-serious or grounded- an increasing amount of people in the “creative class” can’t bring themselves to care about it. “Who cares?” “None of it matters anyways!” It’s a deeply cynical- almost nihilistic- way of making things Funny that people who approach fiction with an attitude of “we don’t care about this shit, why do you?” must also constantly amend their work to appease another class of people who believe certain things are off-limits and Representation Matters because they think fiction IS real

Capcom removing the “erotica” points from Dead Rising is very cowardly. That game came out at the height of an era where tabloid rags and MTV were blasting the public with THE LATEST CELEB UPSKIRT SHOTS daily- the feeling of tawdry predatory invasiveness was a feature, not a bug Image I wish I could be surprised that the “of course video games are political!! They always were!!” crowd is mostly applauding one of the rare actual examples of a Japanese dev team making a pointed statement about American culture getting sandblasted away, but I am not.

Wonder if part of the reason things are generally more stale and uninventive is because the internet has provided a quick and easy resource for people to look back at the things that influenced them more directly, rather than going off their vague murky memories of them. Back in the day people would grow up wishing they were able to see That Episode again- Flash Gordon, Twilight Zone, etc- Or maybe a play they saw and could never see again- that they would buckle down and create their own unique thing that gave them that feeling.

The difference between old and new fandoms is that new ones don’t really attempt to back up their resentment and entitlement with any knowledge (or even just meaningless redundant trivia) they just throw around viral catchphrases and buzzwords and insults and ‘gotchas’ Whatever FGC people transformed into over these last dozen years is probably the clearest example of this.

I would argue that what makes a video game "funny" relies far more on its presentation and mechanics than it does on dialogue or jokes. Oblivion is a great example of this GTAIV is another good example. Its jokes aren’t all painfully unfunny in the way that Borderlands is, but none of them are as humorous as the shenanigans that emerge during normal gameplay: the real humor isn’t the writing, it’s the Euphoria engine!
