some overall thoughts on VP's recent substack I go through point by point in the thread starting here:

a) some of the points are anodyne - we should boost older people (I think his implication is by doing anything else, we arent focusing on that? but we can do >1 thing) b) some are his typical anti NPI -- no school or business closures, no mask mandates, never do asymptomatic testing -- which he dismisses ostensibly because they lack or have negative evidence, which is, at best, debatable and involving complex issues of equipoise and logistics

some personal health news:

in July, 2020, I started noticing some trouble walking & slurred speech, which gradually than quickly

I was eventually diagnosed with a paraneoplastic syndrome in March, 2021

I wrote about my experience in @JAMANeuro:
jamanetwork.com/journals/jaman… after starting immunosuppression last year, I have stabilized. I use a walker outside the home and have slurred speech. I have been back at work for a few months now.

fortunately, the underlying cancer -- microscopic seminoma in my thymus -- doesn't seem to be a problem

I read this thread so you don't have to

also, I did sign the letter to @Spotify

some take aways 🧵 there's a lot here

for starters, platforms can choose who they platform. neither Joe Rogan nor Spotify choose to share my tweets, are they censoring me?

kids simply dont die a lot, which is good

COVID is making more kids die, which is bad

downplaying COVID's direct impact on kids is monstrous. just in 0-4y and 5-9y

total COVID deaths vs 2019 deaths:
259 vs 3676 0-4y
582 vs 2333 5-9y

as a % that's 7% & 24.9% (!)

and death is far from the only harm to kids from COVID

COVID is bad for kids

far, far worse than masks or remote school

pandemics: where everyone’s actions only affect themselves & their family and never anyone else a pretty universal tradition across families from all cultures until fairly recently was called “dying of communicable diseases”

oh look, someone has opinions on @AmerAcadPeds recent tweet about their child masking recommendations

gonna take a look here's the tweet he is criticizing (based on both the context in his video and his other tweets):

so one frustrating thing (among many, many frustrating things) is it is hard to get a good number on children deaths from COVID, and reported numbers vary a bit, for a couple reasons, and it is very hard to compare to other causes of death (eg flu & RSV) first: what ages are included? 0-14? 0-17 0-18? 0-19? 0-21? different stats can include different age ranges; sometimes older kids are more like adults

esp when comparing vs total child deaths, more older teens includes more motor vehicle collisions etc

hogwarts bag 6 was pretty stressful and without any stickers first of all it’s working on an angle to hard to see exactly where everything lines up, the perspective makes it not very clear

here's what this looks like as excess cases per million doses I did all 4 tables from the CDC VAERS slides she shared (1st & 2nd dose, 7 & 21 day windows, see top left of each table)

my math is (obs - expected*)/doses

*I used the lower end of the expected rate to make the estimate as high as possible, ie worse case scenario

also maybe consider how many people unvaccinated kids can infect (and how many those people infect, and so forth) compared to 2.4% with severe fatigue because it’s a pandemic Image also should probably subtract the 0.4-0.7% fatigue in the placebo groups

the vaccine Trump was so proud of he got it secretly and didn’t tell anyone after this, this is much better and so much more human

so @AlexBerenson is concerned that with 4 weeks of reporting, there are 285 deaths reported to VAERS in people who received COVID vaccines – is that a lot?

as @KevinMKruse says, let’s dig in (with some simple googling and back of the envelope math) first of all, as put excellently in the book Factfulness, when some gives you a number, ask for another number

285 deaths could be a lot, how many people have received the COVID vaccine? about 21.7 million first doses

so about 1.31 per 100k

thank you everyone who made this possible–the scientists, the study participants, the staff, everyone–such a privilege to be able to get my vaccine so I can stay healthy to help people when they’re sick iPhone shuffle mix on the ride home:
Take on me (in a week)
Hard to handle (expecting a sore arm)
happenings 10 years time ago (decades of vaccine research)
Praise you (who did the work to get us here)
Fever pitch (vaccine aches)
We can work it out (we’ll get through this)

vaccine, good.

I will get vaccinated as soon as I can, which, as an ER doc, will be "soon"

which is

0.97 US deaths in the Vietnam war
