A short 🧵 on #TaskDesign using this weeks #Science lesson ☺️
1/4 This week we were building our understanding of circuits & their components.
We investigated voltage & its impact on a circuit. The #retrieval task linked back to previous lesson & unit. 2/4 Then experimented with adding cells to circuits to see how it affect components like the bulb 💡& buzzer 🔊
We tested first using @PhETsims simulator, this helped us gain a clearer understanding & visualise the electrons moving.
Then we applied this to physical components.

Task design reading list in a short 🧵 thread 👍
I have been asked this a few times, most recently by @Baggiepr & I will have undoubtedly missed something. I can imagine that @MorgsEd will have further reading to add, however, these are my recommended reads regarding #TaskDesign
1/10 First up it’s the incredible @olicav. Focussed purely on my understanding of Dual Coding Theory & for building in icons to enhance meaning within concepts.
I have used the theory simplistically but I genuinely believe the rewards are plenty.
A thread 🧵 on books for #primary #computing it’s incredibly important to have books for everything.
I’ve been meaning to share this for a while.
Are you a computing lead, bookmark, recommend & buy ☺️
It’s important to note, a lot of these books are American in origin.
We’ll start with the heavy weights!
Hello Ruby @hellorubyworld is an absolutely incredible series of books written by @lindaliukas
It has been published in over 20+ languages & has a really nice selection of resources on the website. helloruby.com/books

So this week I have been trialling @YouHueApp in my class & honestly this is one of the best apps I’ve used on a while.
Here’s a thread 🧵 in a nutshell it’s a way to check in on the emotions of my class.
#edutwitter #education #UKEdChat #EdTech #teachertwitter
So the quick context, like many schools we use the language of @ZonesOfReg & the idea of checking in at points during the day.
So our head @DominicJ_Martin suggested in KS2 we:
➡️Check in
👍Check up
⬅️Check out
I’m not a fan of display emotions & putting them on display…

A disciplinary tale in 4 lessons, a thread 🧵
I previously shared some of the things we @DominicJ_Martin and I were doing around disciplinary knowledge and planning to incorporate this.
It’s still a moving thing but I thought I’d what we had done recently in Y5 #Geography
The unit is on energy, natural resources & renewables, & I like to start my ‘new’ learning off with some BIG #retrieval
Some general ideas to tease out previous Geography learning. I think it orients and contextualises where we’re going next.

Another thread 🧵 on graphic organisers & thinking models!
1/8 The more I work with various GOs & thinking models by putting ideas from @MrGoodwin23 & @olicav into practice, the more apparent it becomes that more of us need to do this… 2/8 as a staff team we’ve been trialling different task design models and adapting these where we can.
Staff have been incredibly open & resilient with these. They know they might not always work as intended but aren’t put off & the keep going.

A thread 🧵 on disciplinary knowledge 🧠
1/ We’ve being focussing on getting the children to work in a disciplinary way in subjects, like #History, #Geography etc.
After discussion with @DominicJ_Martin & our geography lead. We replanned our geography unit.. #TaskDesign
2/7 First lesson (taught last week) was looking at Europe & locating countries & cities.
There was general success. Instead of just identifying our geography lead advised giving a focus:
Landlocked, coastal, northern etc.
This was more disciplinary & a progression from KS1

A 🧵 “The importance of thinking models”
1/6
A blank whiteboard or page can be overwhelming & halt pace or discussion.
Inspired by #SOLOtaxonomy @UnityResSch @baronbedford use of hexagons to link & form connections. I gave children a model to extend their thinking in #History 2/6 I encouraged children to remember & connect as much as they can from their Ancient Egypt topic.
With some icons as prompts the discussion started.
In my head this was a great opportunity to rehearse with a partner before building a concept map of their own later.
