Big feast coming up, and you know you're going to overdo it. You should overdo it. Here's how to do it the right, least harmful way:

1. Hard workout the day off. Deplete that glycogen, break down that muscle, get your body primed to accept all the incoming energy and nutrients. 2. Some berberine just before the meal. It'll help increase energy expenditure, allowing more "calories out" and helping you actually use the extra food you're eating.

3. Vinegary salad before. Vinegar improves glucose tolerance, lowers postprandial blood sugar.

I don't like doctors. Some of my best friends are doctors, and they know how I feel, but I have a real problem with the way modern medicine operates.

Story time. A few people you know have a heart-warming medical story to tell you. Everyone has a bad medical story to tell. Here is one of my many. I’m almost embarrassed to tell it because I didn’t follow my gut and do what I felt was best for myself and ended up paying for it as a result.

We were inundated with apocalyptic imagery and headlines about a virus that could kill hundreds of millions. Biohazard suits, people dropping in the streets, ventilator shortages.

Every channel, 24-7, nothing but very important, very concerned authorities saying BE SCARED. We weren't told about the modifiable risk factors for its severity. We were on our own—this thing would find you sooner or later. "Nothing can be done."

Guy walks past you without a mask, you're getting it.

Delivery driver breathes on your package, you're done.

More evidence that Long COVID is a psychological disorder. Doesn't mean it's not "real." But it does mean it may be something of a self-fulfilling prophecy: if you're incredibly anxious and stressed out about getting long COVID, you might be right.

Do you ice soft tissue injuries? Recently updated my older post on icing injuries where I was very skeptical. Still skeptical, but it appears to help in some cases.

"Gradual weight loss" is a myth, a grand lie perpetuated on the masses.

Rapid weight loss works better, works faster, and leads to greater lasting changes. The trick is losing weight rapidly by adopting a healthy way of eating and living. One that you can stick with.

The BCG vaccine actually protects against COVID infection—including variants

Maybe we should be giving that instead. Seems like a point everyone can rally around. Long-used vaccine, good safety profile. Traditional style. Actually, uncontroversially WORKS

If cultured meat replaces traditional animal husbandry, as is the stated goal, the ability to provide animal protein becomes an intellectual property controlled by the few and the powerful. If cultured meat allows producers to micromanage the fatty acid and nutrient content of their product, whose idea of "healthy" do you think they'll follow?

I'm not a vegetarian (although my wife and son have dabbled with it). I'm certainly not a vegan. I don't recommend that anyone eat a totally plant-based diet for health reasons.

But I know people are going to do it, and I'd like to help them do it the healthiest way possible. Many of you are in the same boat. Maybe it's someone you care about going vegan. Maybe it's a family member or a son or daughter.

Rather than let their skin grow sallow, bones brittle, teeth loosened—what if we tried to optimize the substandard diet they're going to do anyway?

Try to imagine this guy shambling along a sidewalk, hunchback and instability forcing him to stare at his feet just to avoid breaking something.

You can't imagine it. Try to imagine this guy dutifully filling out a prescription for a half dozen meds, foremost among them boner pills.

You can't imagine it.

ADHD expresses itself differently depending on environment.

Rural nomadic Kenyans: ADHD "genetic signature" improves bodyweight, more muscle, better nutrition

Rural settled Kenyans: ADHD "genetic signature" reduces fitness, lower body weight Variant in question reduces response to dopamine. You need more dopamine for "same effect."

Promotes novelty seeking, more "extreme" inputs to get the same dopamine hit.

In hunter gatherer environment, this is helpful.

Hanging out with my granddaughter has made me realize something I think I might have missed my first time around with my own kids:

Children mostly exist in pure flow state. They simply are. Watch them at play or hard at work on a piece of art or tough math problem. They are fully immersed in the moment. Children possess what adults are trying to attain when they meditate: they want to just flow again without passing judgment on everything.

“Hey Mark Netflix says humans are herbivores”

We used animal femurs as bone marrow storage containers. We fought off massive African predators just to get at the meat and crack the bones for the goodness inside. We slurped brains. We smashed bones to bits and boiled them in animal skin bags to extract every last ounce of collagen and fat. We drove entire species to extinction in our lust for large portions of fatty animal meat.

I got COVID back in November. Just before Thanksgiving, actually.

A person I'd ridden in the car with told me the next day they'd tested positive. I self isolated until I got symptoms, got the test to confirm, and continued to self isolate.

How was it? My first symptoms after exposure on Monday were a single bout of diarrhea on Friday followed by sniffles, some mild congestion, including chest congestion. No further GI symptoms.

I took an antihistamine and slept well that night. The next day it was more of the same.

I travel a lot. Today I’m finally home after living out of my suitcase the last couple weeks.

Here’s how I avoid jet lag and save my circadian rhythm: 1. Fast until it’s morning at my destination. If that means arriving at noon and fasting until the next morning, so be it. If that means arriving in AM and eating immediately, so be it.

2. Stay awake until nighttime at my destination. No naps.
