🧵Scandalous UN voting shift by Germany, Italy, Hungary, Czechia, Bulgaria & Latvia - withholding support for extending UNRWA's mandate, despite ongoing Gaza humanitarian apocalypse and the ICJ validating UNRWA's indispensable role just last month. yahoo.com/news/articles/…Image In vote on a second UNRWA-related resolution yesterday, those 6 EU countries were further joined by Austria, Romania & Lithuania. In previous years, all EU-27 voted in favour of these resolutions.

Why shift now? Only to align further with Israel & deal another blow to int'l law. Image

🧵Whatever one thinks of cultural boycotts, this is peak example of double standards.

The Munich Philharmonic fired Russian conductor over stance on Ukraine - no protest.

Belgian festival cancels Israeli conductor of the Munich Philharmonic over stance on Gaza - "antisemitism"! Image

Some people say: You can't compare, Valery Gergiev is close to Putin, Lahav Shani has said he wants to see peace. But that's not the point!

In both cases, the conductors were asked to distance themselves from their government's immoral wars - and both refused. Image

I see folks who’d strongly reject anyone blaming Crimea annexation on EU support for Maidan now sharing this as some kind of a valid point of view. /1 It’s even more of a bogus claim in this case as the Israeli push for annexation has been mounting for months & years. Only if you’ve been wilfully blind to all the steps and pronouncements👇can you fall for this. /2 peacenow.org.il/en/the-year-of…

🧵Some precedents & context of EU blocking funds under the Horizon Europe research program - showing how limited the proposed suspension for Israel is.

5 precedents:

1) Russia: EU terminated all Horizon funding in response to the 2022 invasion of Ukraine 2) Belarus: halted due to worsening human rights situation following 2020 elections as well as involvement in Russia's Ukraine war

3) Hungary: 30 Hungarian universities & institutions barred from Horizon over rule of law and academic freedom concerns since 2022

.@EUobs scandalous story on EU antisemitism envoy @kschnurbein now accessible without paywall, incl. leaked notes from her closed-door EU briefing.

Here are some of the craziest points – from an EU official supposed to promote fundamental values:🧵

🧵On Monday, EU will hold Association Council with Israel, the highest political platform for bilat. relations.

Takes place at a critical moment in Gaza ceasefire - w/Netanyahu suspected of planning to derail it - and Israeli escalation in West Bank.

Can EU exert any influence? It can, of course. EU is Israel's biggest trading partner (32% of imports, 26% of exports in 2022).

The key to using this leverage lies in Article 2 of EU-Israel Association Agreement.

The AA is the basis for EU-Israel relationship, esp. trade on preferential terms.

❗️Piotr Hofmański, former Polish president of the ICC, slams Polish government's decision to protect Netanyahu from the ICC arrest warrant:

"This will harm Poland greatly in the international arena. ... There is an int'l legal obligation to fully cooperate with the ICC and a state that does not fulfill this obligation puts itself in a very uncomfortable situation. ... From a legal point of view, the matter is clear as day. There is an arrest warrant against the PM of Israel on suspicion of committing war crimes and states are obliged to execute it.

Catastrophic and irresponsible decision by Sweden.

Calling on Israel not to dismantle UNRWA and then pre-emptively defunding the UN agency themselves.

Consider how absurd and self-contradictory this is on several leves. 🧵1/x 1) Here, the responsible Swedish minister who just visited Palestine mentions stories of women & children in Gaza that were "among the worst I have heard".

Yet in the same breath, he's ending funds for UNRWA - the very lifeline for those women &children.

🧵A few more points on the French position on the ICC arrest warrant for Netanyahu.

Bottomline: there's very likely no immunity for Netanyahu in France, despite the MFA announcement last Wednesday.

There have been 2 developments since then: 1) On Thursday, @francediplo spox gave further clarifications.

- The arrest warrant will be "up to the judiciary", not the French government.

- "There has been no change in position" between the arrest warrants for Putin and Netanyahu. diplomatie.gouv.fr/fr/salle-de-pr…

Belated🧵on @MinColonna's report on UNRWA.

Media coverage has (rightly) focused on Israel's failure to provide evidence of its allegations. That's indeed the main takeaway.

But there's a 2nd layer to the story: Colonna's bias and bending to Israel's & Western donors' politics. That's visible if you compare Colonna's report with the underlying report by the 3 Nordic research institutes that worked with her on the review (posted here: ). Colonna's report is based on the researchers' report but differs significantly. passblue.com/wp-content/upl…

🧵How will Western gov'ts respond to ICJ's expected order for "provisional measures" on Gaza tomorrow?

Let's look at precedents.

In the Myanmar, Ukraine & Syria cases at ICJ, Western states stressed that ICJ provisional measures are binding and must be fully implemented. A. MYANMAR (the closest precedent).

🧵1) The @EURightsAgency (FRA) is conducting a large new survey of perceptions of antisemitism among 1000s of Jewish Europeans. But there's a very problematic bias in some of the questions, based on the controversial IHRA definition. - "Denying Israel the right to exist as a State"
- "Comparing Israel's policy to the Nazi policy"
- "Applying double standards to Israel's gov't when comparing to other democratic States"
