82 years ago today, Elbert Williams, 32, a Black civil rights activist working to register voters in rural west TN was murdered. An NAACP official calls Mr. Williams “the first martyr of the NAACP.”

Thread 🧵 1/10 On the night of June 20, 1940, a group of men led by Brownsville police officer Tip Hunter took Mr. Williams from his home. Police claimed to have held him in the city jail to interrogate him about his NAACP work.
