I wish political journalists felt as zealous about their role in society as I do. If you're trying to hold a party to account but their behaviour keeps getting worse, what you're doing isn't working.

A thread on ways in which @CCHQPress is spitting in the face of journalism: 1) Eschewing proper use of spokespersons in favour of anonymous briefings that frequently turn out to misleading.
Instead of refusing to participate in this shift away from accountability, journalists appear to be competing to be the hand-picked purveyor of this propaganda.

Since Jacob Rees-Mogg is trending, let’s see what his supporters have been talking about this week.

Aha, flinging homophobic abuse and violent threats at @OwenJones84. Business as usual, then.

[THREAD] 2/ Owen’s call for non-violent protest has gravely offended a group that has spent years advocating for actual civil war and genocide.

Hi @BrexitParty_uk.

I’m afraid this is another dodgy choice.

[THREAD] 2/ Wendy has shared Islamophobic codswallop like this:

Yesterday the Brexit Party announced the names of their parliamentary candidates, so I thought I’d have a quick look.

I’m afraid it’s bad news.

[THREAD] 2/ Meet John Booker, an ex-UKIP councillor from Sheffield. You’d think the @brexitparty_uk might do some social media vetting of their candidates, but apparently not...

Some interesting policy suggestions for @BorisJohnson here from his supporters over on Facebook. [THREAD] 2/

With news that Boris Johnson is leading the polls for next Tory leader, let’s have a look at what his supporters are talking about this week. [THREAD] 2/ They’re upset about the idea of Muslims holding elected office. They’re happily parroting Boris’ jibes about ‘letter boxes’.

Nigel Farage has declared that the Brexit Party will be ‘intolerant of intolerance’. So I did some investigation on pro-Brexit Party Facebook groups, and passed the results to the Sunday Times. And it’s worrying stuff.

thetimes.co.uk/article/islamo… 2/ It was depressing to see that so many lslamophobes that I’d previously reported to the Tories had simply switched allegiance to the Brexit Party.

We need to talk about David Abbott, the deputy mayor of Houghton Regis. The Times is running an article on him today, but since it’s behind a paywall I’ll tweet the main points. THREAD: 2/ Last month, @evolvepolitics revealed that David, who currently sits as an independent but was planning to run as a Conservative in May, was an admin of the deeply Islamophobic ‘Boris Johnson Supporters Group’ on Facebook:

In this thread, I'm going to prove unequivocally that @BrandonLewis lied to us all on Nov 7th 2018. It wasn’t a harmless lie, it was a deeply cynical abuse of his position. He must resign.
Please retweet, and please tag any journalists who might be interested: 2/ The lie: in response to @HopeNotHate’s tweet about
Islamophobia, Brandon replied “We deal with complaints, none outstanding”. The only logical interpretation of this is that, at that time, Brandon wasn't aware of any unresolved Islamophobia complaints. And that was a lie.

On Tuesday, the Tories were finally forced to suspend fourteen of their racist members based on my reports.🚮

But I’ve made ten new member reports since then, all collected into this thread ⬇️

@BrandonLewis won’t take action unless he has to, so please retweet! 1) Mandy Greenhalgh

For weeks I’ve been reporting @Conservatives members for Islamophobic hate-speech. But I’m concerned that @BrandonLewis might not be seeing my reports. So I’ve compiled them all into one thread, and hope you’ll retweet to ensure he sees them and takes action: #1 Fiona Pancheri

[THREAD] Once again, supporters of Jacob Rees-Mogg are openly inciting civil war and violence in the UK.

The media seems uninterested in reporting on this, so please retweet.

Or better still - tag the media outlets who should be covering it! 2/ Julie thinks people should learn to shoot. Lena wants to make petrol bombs. Ben’s ready to go to war.

After his appearance on This Week, @OwenJones84 was subjected to a torrent of violent threats and homophobic abuse by the Jacob Rees-Mogg Supporters Group. [THREAD] 2/ Given that Owen has actually been physically assaulted today, threats like this are far from just idle talk:

[THREAD] For months I’ve been asking @jacob_rees_mogg to address the violent threats, abuse and racism his followers display on social media. I’ve had no luck so far, so I’m asking everyone to please retweet this thread, and see if we can get his attention: 2/ Your followers frequently call for terror attacks against mosques, and they do it in a group devoted to supporting you, Jacob.

We all know Brexit is something people feel strongly about, but it’s surely alarming that supporters of @Jacob_Rees_Mogg are now openly discussing their preparations for civil war. [THREAD] 2/ @MetCC might be interested to see that Paul here is directly threatening violence against the police if they’re not on his ‘side’

Ok Twitter, I need your help. Jacob Rees-Mogg will be appearing on Question Time tonight in Durham. It would be a perfect opportunity for someone to ask him about the disgusting and violent racism that his supporters display online. [THREAD] 2/ Please retweet these examples, and if you know of anyone who’ll be in the audience then please suggest that they ask him to condemn the calls for genocide and ethnic cleansing that his supporters are posting daily in the ‘Jacob Rees-Mogg Supporters Group’
