Clearview AI built its facial recognition system by exploiting your “publicly available” social media profile photos.

They were able to do this because most social media companies make profile photos public by default and deprive users of the option to hide them. Thread: On Facebook, "your current profile picture and cover photo are public, so they can be seen by anyone on or off Facebook." There's no setting to change this. Today the ACLU sued the FBI, DHS, and five other federal agencies to learn more about how they monitor social media users and speech. But local law enforcement agencies have been very active in this space too. (Thread) We have already seen how local police spy on social media users.
