For @theintercept, I got previously unpublished emails showing how ICE used social media and information from CLEAR, Thomson Reuters's for-profit database, to track down and arrest an immigrant in southern California. theintercept.com/2019/12/22/ice… @theintercept We've known for a while that ICE is using social media posts to track immigrants they've targeted for arrest. These documents show us exactly HOW.

A) Using information bought from data brokers to confirm that Facebook accounts belong to the person they're looking for

I was at the hospital in Chula Vista yesterday afternoon where CBP agents were standing guard outside of a room where a 19-year-old asylum-seeker had just given birth. She had been separated from her baby. Her lawyers were worried that she would be sent back to MX. (1/x) Her lawyer was able to get a Border Patrol supervisor on the phone to ask if they were going to separate the family. The supervisor said they weren't. Still, the infant was being kept in intensive car and the mother was in a room with two Border Patrol Agents guarding the door.

This ends a really sad and disturbing few years in the Queens county courts system. The case against Lewis was complicated, his defense team was sharp, and prosecutors and the judge pulled every trick in the book to secure a conviction. The lawyers at @LegalAidNYC have announced they will handle his appeal. Where to begin? Widespread judicial misconduct, from allowing Brady material to be withheld from the defense, to wearing a purple tie in solidarity with the victim's family.

Just got out of the first day of Operation Streamline in San Diego — court is still in session, but here are some quick notes on it so far.

a) 41 people were brought to court today straight from border patrol stations where they were held all weekend. b) They were brought to basement of the federal building in chains where they were interviewed in an open room by their attorneys.
c)They were wearing the clothes they were arrested in. They had slept on the floor of a border patrol station & many had to share space blankets.

NEW exclusive from @georgejoseph94 and me — In the rush to incarcerate as many immigrants as possible, ICE is putting civil immigration detainees into general population units in federal prison, creating a wildly dangerous and cruel situation. theappeal.org/exclusive-immi… This is a really interesting bit of fallout from California's "sanctuary" laws. Because ICE can't create new contracts with county jails in the state to house detainees, it had to turn to federal prisons, which are ill-equipped to deal with a civil immigrant detainee population.
