I don't think people understand how bad things are. Money raised after the SCOTUS leak is LONG gone. Most "pro-choice" people were mad for a month & then moved on. Abortion costs skyrocketed, donations dried up, and Dems hung everyone out to dry. MANY funds are barely hanging on. Abortion funds are hanging by a thread. Clinics in ban states (which still provide CRUCIAL repro care like ultrasounds, contraception, & abortion follow-ups!!!) are going broke. Clinics in legal states have month-long waits. Tens of thousands are being forced to give birth.

🧵 The best way to concretely support abortion access a year after #RoevWade was overturned is still the same as it was before Dobbs — support the organizations that are providing direct services.

Six orgs that actually help folks access abortion care and need more support: .@AbortionFunds are absolutely crucial for helping folks in need get abortions. They provide funding to cover the costs of abortion care, travel, childcare, & more. Many also distribute Plan B & other repro supplies.

ICYMI: I’ve been in Twitter Jail for sharing the official WHO protocol for medication abortion, which Twitter says is “promoting self-harm.” I’m a public health scientist with expertise in medication abortion—and the National Academies have a consensus report on its HIGH safety. A screenshot of a notice from Twitter that says, “Delete TA screenshot of a notice from Twitter that includes a tweet It’s my responsibility as a researcher & a health educator to share this. Abortion pills are extremely safe. Self-managed abortion is extremely safe. No billionaire can change those scientific facts. People deserve to have evidence-based info to make their own health decisions.

I am begging y’all to realize we are not going to vote our way out of this. They have nothing. They have been briefed over and over and over by legal experts on alternative actions they could take right now. Today. And they still CHOOSE to do nothing. It is honestly amazing how mad people get at you for pointing out this demonstrable fact, but not at the extremely powerful people who SO transparently do not give even the slightest shit about them. It's actually just very sad how cultish the U.S. political system is.

PLEASE stop with the “camping” stuff. However well-intended, it’s INCREDIBLY dangerous for the people doing it and for abortion patients. You are SERIOUSLY underestimating how many militant anti-abortion activists would be thrilled to pose as a patient or host. You are literally advertising yourself as a holding location for people who are about to have an abortion. Do you know how many abortion clinics have been set on fire in the past 5 years??How many clinic workers and volunteers get stalked??? You are putting people in danger.

PSA: Many abortion bans are NOT yet in effect!!!

States with a total abortion ban in effect as of 6/27: Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah. Ohio has a 6-Week ban in effect.

Abortion is legal (but not necessarily accessible) in all other states! Researchers at Guttmacher are maintaining a living chart of bans that take effect: states.guttmacher.org/policies/

🧵 emergency contraception x weight (updated)

The best evidence we have suggests that Plan B & generics are less effective in folks >155 lbs. Likewise, data suggests that Ella is less effective >195 lbs. The existing data is a bit mixed, but overall, it seems likely to be true. Hormonal & copper IUDs can also be used for emergency contraception and aren't impacted by weight. But they have major cons: requires a clinic visit, often expensive without insurance, insertion can be painful, lasts for years, etc. That said, they're a good option for some!

🧵I am seeing A LOT of confusion about the different types of abortions. Here's a very brief guide to some of the most common abortion methods: Medication abortion is overall the most common method. It uses 2 medications: mifepristone (mife) & misoprostol (miso) to end an early pregnancy (usually up to 10 weeks). If you go into a clinic, you usually take mife there, and then take miso at home. It's very safe & effective.

A beginner’s NO list for talking about abortion accurately & without stigma:

🚫 coat hangers

🚫 handmaids

🚫 “safe, legal, rare”

🚫 gendered language

🚫 “Underground Railroad”

🚫 “only ends safe abortion”

🚫 euphemisms like “right to choose”

🚫 “no one’s pro-abortion” FAQs on why this language is unhelpful, stigmatizing, or just plain wrong: docs.google.com/document/d/1w_…

Abortion has no long-term health effects whatsoever. All of these myths about increases in risk for depression, breast cancer, infertility, etc. are exactly that—myths. Nothing about abortion is dangerous. It has a lower complication rate than wisdom teeth removal or colonoscopy. 🧵 Before I say this I want to be very clear that Lizelle is NOT at all to blame for what is being done to her. Full stop.

But for others in the future, there are some things you can do to reduce (not eliminate) the risk of criminalization with a miscarriage or abortion at home: 1. Leave no online footprint of searches or purchases. Digital Defense Fund's privacy guide is your go-to. Private browsing, 2-factor authentication, encrypted messaging, etc. are critical: digitaldefensefund.org/ddf-guides/abo…
