Over the past month, I've asked hundreds of writers what their #1 goal is for their copy biz over the next 6-12 months.

$5,000/month is the most common answer.

You don't need a year to do that.

Here's how you can hit $5K/month in 6-8 weeks: 🧵 This assumes you have:

• No clients
• No portfolio
• No relevant experience
• No connections

If you have ANY of these, you could knock this out even faster.

This is the exact process I've used to help beginner copywriters make their first $2K... $5K... and even $10K/month:

In 2018, I made $18,000 as a copywriter.

In 2022, I made $260,000 as a copywriter.

What did I do differently? 👇 • I stopped taking my foot off the gas.

My failures in 2018 weren't because I was bad as a copywriter or because I was lazy in 2018.

It's because I was lazy in 2014.

See, in 2014 I made $140K... and I got complacent.

I stopped trying so hard.

“I’d love to join your program, but I’ve already bought several copywriting courses. What’s new about your approach?”

That question perfectly highlights the reason you have no clients.

Let me explain: In the last few days, I’ve DMed hundreds of writers and I get that answer a lot.

And that answer already tells me they aren’t going to make it.

Because they’re focusing on the wrong issue.

When I got serious about my copywriting career, I was able to quit my job in less than 24 hours.

A story: I don't come from money.

I grew up in a poor house. My mom was a receptionist. My dad was on disability.

I was in debt from my sophomore year in high school onward.

So it's not like I come from privilege or any sort of advantage.

I was at Square Zero.

Something happened in my private copywriting community yesterday that nearly brought tears to my eyes: While I am sharing it here (with permission from the OP), I did not ask for this.

It’s been a rough couple of weeks over here in my career, particularly dealing with a problem client that beat me up pretty good financially.

It happens.

Then one of my writers did this: Image

If you want a copywriting business you can build to $25,000/month, do this: 🧵 - Have a system for cold outreach.

Clients are out there. Go get them. Email, message, DM, whatever - find where they are and start reaching out. 25-50/day.

What many of you lack is the understanding that outsourcing to a level where you’re making seven figures a year is freaking HARD.

Get ready to spend all your time managing your contractors and putting out fires.

You think you’re taking your family on months-long vacations? Besides the fact that - as my newest client attested to yesterday - the bros who are so adamant about “scaling” are just 20-year olds who took a course and now think they are King Sh*t Copywriters or something.

Max out your time first. See how much you’re making. Go from there.

A lot of copywriters tell me they're "waiting" for XYZ before starting client outreach.

It's just an excuse to do nothing.

You only need 7 things to sell yourself to multimillion-dollar clients.

And you probably already have most of them: 🧵 1. An email address that isn't embarrassing.

If your email address is name @ gmail . com, you're fine.

If your email address is prettyhugedick420 @ gmail . com, you're gonna need a new email address.

As a freelance copywriter, I gave myself a 1,633% raise.

All it took was shifting my mindset in 6 very important ways.

Check it (and the math, for proof): 🧵 In 2018, I made less than $15,000 from client work.

In 2022, I made $260,000.

Yes, the math checks out. And no, 2018 wasn't my first year.

How did I do it? I made these six mindset shifts:

Late Night Story Time:

20+ years ago, my high school sweetheart of over 2 years dumped me very suddenly.

Let's call her "Sally", for privacy's sake.

I thought we would get married, but she lost interest in me.

We had a VERY messy, ugly breakup. 1/ Complicating that breakup was Sally's mom, who notoriously hated me for our entire relationship.

She did everything she could to get in our way.

A couple years ago, Sally's little sister became members at my church. Her daughter is 1 year younger than my son. 2/

The worst part of joining a copywriting program is the lack of support.

You get a bunch of instructions to follow, but when you have a question, you’re stuck figuring it out on your own.

Not in Solo Copy Foundations.

Look… Now, you already get direct support from me.

You can DM me. I get back to you in 24 hours (or less). I walk you through whatever you’re confused about.

But you also get access to the entire group of writers - and many have told me this is their favorite part of the program.

It's May 2023 and there are still writers swearing up and down that UpWork is a great place to "start" getting clients.

Dopes.

You are 100% wrong, and I'll prove it: 🧵 - You're competing on price.

Common objection, but is true.

You're pitching yourself against copywriters in the Philippines who will charge 90% less than you.

Clients on UpWork are there to save money. They want lower bids.

YOU: "I need to be the best copywriter possible if I want to make a living!"

Pffff.

I'm an average copywriter at best, and I make $250,000 per year as a freelancer.

Here's why: 🧵 • I have an excellent cold outreach system.

I've been doing it for 15 years.

The same system, over and over again.

When I need work, I don't try to reinvent the wheel. I just execute my proven strategy.

My income in 2017: $35,000.
My income in 2022: $260,000.

Same copywriting business.

How did I give myself a 643% raise?

By spotting - and fixing - these 6 mistakes: 1. "I don't have time to market myself!"

Tom, you dope.

Your pipeline needs to always be full.

You need warm clients "on call" whenever you lose one.

I can get you to $5,000/month in copywriting income in 6 weeks or less.

And it's going to piss you off... 🧵 Why would it piss you off?

Because it's simple.

It's not EASY... but it's simple.

A few well-thought-out moves, consistently every day, will get results.

You want copywriting clients NOW?

Stop building a brand.

It's costing you at least 2-3 years of good money.

This is the problem... 🧵 Image Building a brand is "inbound" marketing, where potential clients approach you.

Sounds great, right?

But those selling you this idea are preying on the fact that you don't WANT to go get clients. You're lazy. We all are.

It's a great idea, but you want clients NOW.

"Where do I start in freelance copywriting?"

You pick a niche.

But relax...

Many writers spend ages stressing about this.

Today, you'll find yours in under 5 minutes.

A THREAD: Image Lots of copy guys on Twitter will avoid discussing these because they want to promote their niche-finding courses.

I have a program too, but first, you'll choose a niche for free.

Let's pretend I lost everything and needed to rebuild my copywriting business from zero to $5,000/month in just 4-6 weeks.

Here's my plan: 🧵 Let's say everything vanished in an instant:

• My income
• My connections
• My portfolio

I'm back at the starting point.

How do I bounce back?

Want to scale up your business? You'd better do this first: You’re going to hate this.

But it works.

In fact, it’s worked for me for 15 years.

In the summer of 2014, I built a solid oak bookcase for my son… even though I had never built anything before.

What I learned saved me hundreds of wasted hours in my office.

Pull up a chair and let me tell you a story: Image What ensued was multiple weeks of me out in the garage, struggling to figure out what I was doing wrong.

Things got so bad that I actually had to throw out all the wood I purchased and buy a second round from the store.
