So, the Discourse has moved on somewhat from the NYT editorial about free speech and cancel culture, but the latest attempt at a Sensible Centrist Weekly (Compact Magazine) has its own unsurprisingly Contrarian Take on free speech. Let's take a look. 🧵

Let's start by noting that the NYT editorial was (as to be expected, I guess) focused on progressives being mean to people; in particular the idea that free speech means being able to say what you think “without fear of being shamed or shunned.”
This is, of course, remarkable.

I see economists on the line are having a Great Books (aka history of thought) debate and it seems to not be abating quite yet. I have some thoughts to share; possibly of low value but whatever.

I noted in a brief contribution here the other day that there's a fundamental distinction between how economics and, say, sociology are taught. I've heard SOC101 described as "Durkheim/Weber/Marx."
ECON101 is NOT "Smith/Marshall/Keynes" (nor is ECON201 "Walras/Ricardo/Pareto.")
