Pat was my first boss & a huge influence on my leadership style.

She lived her values & empowered those who worked for her to bring about change regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation.

She was truly ahead of her time.

We’ll miss you, Pat!
nytimes.com/2023/03/14/obi… Pat repealed the restrictions against women in combat aviation & surface combatants, leading to leadership opportunities for an entire generation of women in the military.

She fought to ensure service academies, basic training were available to women.

Hello from Denver where we are celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the election of Pat Schroeder! Pat was an amazing politician and the staff are relating anecdotes of her quotable legacy:
She called Reagan “the Teflon President.”
She referred to SDI as “Star Wars”

Today's my last day at @ThirdWayTweet and after nearly a decade at the organization, I just wanted to take some time to say some thank yous to people whose support and encouragement has meant so much to me along the way. First to @ThirdWayKessler and @LVicary for a chance reunion at a wonderful dinner party and a long conversation that turned into an amazing job. Without that evening, I never would have been here.

The number of job announcements that have come across my radar in current days is really amazing.

Lots of transitions happening now! If you're looking for a job, it's a good time to refresh your network and check in with folks. For example, @SheShouldRun is looking for a Chief Operating officer:

I have many differences of opinion w/@DavidAFrench but this point abt the lessons of counter-terrorism and separating the insurgents from the population is important.

frenchpress.thedispatch.com/p/defeat-trump… @DavidAFrench We have this same dynamic in CT. Overbroad language that "muslims are terrorists" radicalized some, made others see authorities oppositionally.

Also during the pandemic, when some accused "China" of the virus, allowing CCP to unite the population & distract from own failures.

One of the things that I really appreciate about @JoeBiden is how he empowers and supports his staff.

I've had many friends work for him, and they have nothing but glowing things to say about his leadership.

He's taking that attitude into his cabinet picks. @JoeBiden He's picked people with a reputation for integrity, candor, and professionalism. Avril Haines, @ABlinken @RonaldKlain, and many more.

These people are all generous with their time and encouragement of others.

As @JoeBiden prepares to name his national security cabinet, I wrote for @DemJournal the fundamental assumptions that have changed since they were last in government.

democracyjournal.org/magazine/59/re… @JoeBiden @DemJournal Biden and his team cannot just "Build Back Better" to the day they left office.

Things have changed.

1) We're not in a post-9/11 world anymore.

The past focus on terrorism came at the expense of other priorities.

White progressives training their fire on women and women of color who are under consideration to lead the nat sec departments makes me deeply uncomfortable about their allyship for those communities.

Especially when the nat sec community is dominated by white men. Efforts to tar @micheleflournoy and @AmbassadorRice as warmongers or in the pocket of the defense industry belittles their expertise and experience. Further, it mistakes their personal views for the contexts in which they served and the President whom they served.

BTW, Kavanaugh's idea that you need "certainty" on election day is definitely *not* and originalist reading of the Constitution, and is the opposite interpretation of reading the text of the document itself. When the Constitution was written, there was no way for states to report their results *on* election day.

Instantaneous communication between the states wasn't available until the 1840s and the invention of the telegraph.

Aside from the obvious misinformation in the NYPost Hunter Biden stories, the media attention to it while underreporting the financial activities of the Trump children is more troubling.

While traditionally, first families are off-limits, Trumps have misused and weaponized it. Unlike past first families:

The Trump children are intimately engaged in the running of government;

Trump & family have refused to divest/recuse themselves from financial conflicts of interest;

Trump & family's financial interests are intertwined.

OTD, nineteen years ago, I was in law school in San Francisco, back where I am right now, when I woke up to a phone call from a high school friend.

“Turn on the TV.” “A plane just hit the World Trade Center.” In the early morning light, as news anchors tried to make sense of the smoking gash where a plane went into the tower, wondering if it was an accident, I watched, incredulous, as a second plane crashed into the towers.

The world exploded.

This @votevets ad features the step-mother of LCpl Alexander Scott Arredondo, killed in Iraq in 2004.

You might remember his father, Carlos, the man in the cowboy hat who rushed to the aid of victims in the Boston Marathon bombing.

thedailybeast.com/carlos-arredon… @votevets Carlos Arredondo was one of the many Gold Star Massachusetts family members to lose someone in Iraq.

His grief, upon notification of his son's death, was heartbreaking. He set himself on fire.

Today is the 75th anniversary of the bombing of #Hiroshima.

It was the 1st time a nuclear weapon was used in anger & it left a searing impression on the world.

But that impression is fading, and with it the political consensus to address arms control. #Hiroshima75 <thread> Eleven United States Senators were born before Hiroshima.

Of those, only five were older than 5 years old when the bomb was dropped.

Of the five who were old enough to remember that event, only one, @SenFeinstein, is a champion for non-proliferation.

May you have the success of a mediocre white man, now with science:

latimes.com/opinion/story/… But seriously, the study in the op-ed shows that despite a perception that women and minorities have a leg up in the hiring process, they are actually *discounted* for having the same qualifications as white men.

Okay. Let's take a deep breath here.

I too have a tendency for worst case scenarios, but the one below is VERY unlikely.

Was just talking it through last night with a colleague.

I'll explain... Actually interfering with people's right to vote by placing unidentified federal agents at polling places enough to sway the election is logistically and legally infeasible.

Unlike the protection of federal property, the feds have no authority over most polling locations.

This seems like a good time to mention that I've been working on & writing about cybercrime for the past couple years.

thirdway.org/report/to-catc… If you're looking for additional resources to understand cybercrime, I've got you covered.

First, it's VERY difficult to find & prosecute cybercriminals. Less than 3 in 1000 reported cyber crime incidents see an arrest.

But most crimes are not reported. lawfareblog.com/we-need-better…

Listening to @RubenGallego & @jeudc dropping knowledge on the state of the 2020 race in Arizona.

Serious insider perspective! @RubenGallego @jeudc Fascinating, AZ has upgraded its counting system, so we may not have to wait a week until after election day to know results.

Lots of vote by mail, so they're prepared for this COVID era.

The Senate Judiciary Committee today is voting on the EARN-IT Act which would say that tech companies might lose one of their foundational legal principles (Section 230 liability protection) based on the say-so of a commission to be named later.

This is a bad idea. There's no doubt that we need a healthier conversation about what tech companies need to do to assist law enforcement to find and stop bad actors on their platforms.

But threatening to knock out the foundation is not the way to figure out how renovate a kitchen.

Other Presidents and guts, a thread. Lieutenant Kennedy, later President, unhesitatingly braved the difficulties and hazards of darkness to direct rescue operations, swimming many hours to secure aid and food after he had succeeded in getting the crew of PT-109 ashore.
