BRITAIN'S SOMALI FRAUD INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX

The sophisticated Somali fraud schemes operating in Minnesota appear to have equivalents across the West, including Britain. Britain's generous welfare system is easily abusable and accessible.

After migrating to Britain from Somalia in 1999, convicted fraudster Shukri Yusuf falsely declared she was a single mother - allowing her to claim over £100,000 in benefits. This money was used to pay for luxuries like a new car and private school fees.

She received just a suspended sentence and 175 hours of community service.

In light of recent reporting on rates of fraud in the Somali community in Minnesota, a Thread with some statistics on Britain's Somali population from the 2021 census:

1) 72% of British Somalis live in state-funded social housing. 2) in London, it's even higher, with a whopping 74% of households headed by a Somali-born resident living in social housing. London property is some of the least affordable in the world - yet huge numbers of Somalis are subsidised to live here.

They often rely on applicant characteristics that are hard to verify... A problem with the PBS introduced from 2002 to 2010 was lack of any cap on numbers (unlike Australia now)

Some these are corollaries of Brexit - e.g. changing of rules on EU criminals to use the tougher standard that applies to non-EU citizens. Anything that prevents dangerous criminals from coming can only be a good thing but this has been touted for years, ie. since 2017...
